Federal investigators approached the campaigns of John McCain and Barack Obama in the summer to inform them that their computers had been hacked by a foreign country or organization, several sources say.

One source says that U.S. authorities know the identity of the hackers but refuse to identify them at all, including their country of origin. The hacks were sophisticated and appeared to target policy information.

The story, first reported in Newsweek, began with Obama campaign workers discovering what they took to be a computer virus. McCain's computers were apparently attacked at the same time. Authorities say many files were taken.

Wow, that's pretty amazing. I suppose such information could be incredibly valuable for strategic purposes. Any speculations anyone?
