Hello there.. I lent my Wii to a friend, I live in Taiwan and use a moded Jap wii. I usually backup games sent to my from US and use WiiFrii to convert the region to -J from -U. Well back to the problem. I lent my wii out and the fool bought a WiiMusic from some pirate, i assume, and tossed it into it, worst of all he did the Update and now nearly all my games are producing an error. (in Jap,, with "OFF" near the middle) I am able to get some games to load, but only a few. The ones that don;t work are locking the system up both if a boot the Wii with the Disc in and if i put the disc in after. My system menu is bricking with the white screen crap (unable to connect, ladadadad) any ideas. My wii was moded here and the chip man is chinese (no english, i don;t speak enough chinese to get what he says) he says its a problem about languages. So what i was thinking was to take that Wiimusic and wiifri it to -J with Jap set as the language and see if it plays.. But i was also hoping that it would redo the update and that might fix it no?
Stupid friend.... i told him not to do it but he still did it.. And to make up for it he gave me the WiiMusic DVD.. He doesn;t understand thats like giving someone the bottle that the poison was it that killed ones (...)....:(

That's a classic partial brick. Your wii was at 3.2j or earlier and he updated it to 3.3e or u. The reason you're having so much trouble with your games is because wiifrii truncha-signs the games when it patches the region and games that have been trunchaed no longer work on 3.3 unless you boot them through gecko OS from the homebrew channel.

What your planning on doing wont work because the console wont read a truncha-signed disk. There is an unbricker disk online but will have the same problem. If you have the homebrew channel already installed you can run the downgrader to rollback the region, but if you dont already have it installed you wont be able to because you cant get into the settings to do the twilight hack.

The only thing I can think of is to get a native j region wii music disk (original or backup wont matter so long as its not patched or anything, just a straight rip) and run it. That should fix the problem.

For the future you may want to change the wii's region to u since you play games from the US anyway. It will save the trouble of having to rip and convert the games.

This is great help, clear and easy to understand eventhough its full of bad news.. No i don;t have Homebrew, ,, never researched it and found a need for it.
since its alittle late i prob won't however i may.. Nevertheless.

Ill see if i can get my hands on a Jap Wii Music. If i put that disc in is it going to reupdate and give back my settings menu? And how do i go about making my old games work. If i understand right. Ill have to unbrick it with a Jap Wiimusic then put homebrew on so i can load my old discs.. Is there anyway to rebackup the U discs to work with the 3.3.

Lastly, how would i change the region to U.
then i wont need to backup anything. although i still might they are expensive.

A WiiMusic Japan version will not work either. It will check the update (version number only) and see you have the latest and just skip the update.

There might be a possible solution.

Try the steps below to get into maintenance mode.

1) Turn on your Wii.
2) Hold down the + and - buttons during the Health and Safety screen
3) While holding down those buttons, hit A

You should go into maintenance mode. See if you can get into your system settings then data management that way. If you can install The Homebrew Channel via Twilight Princess. Then from there you should have more options.

Gave it a go.. seems to go into Maintence mode- "bunch of Jap,, with OK button" but get bricked screen when i click the settings wrench.

maybe i have to wait til the next update comes out.. and when it does, correct me if im wrong.. i have to update the system with a JAP unpatched game, which ever it may be.

@larrylje
It's been my experience that when a game checks for an update it looks for firmware level X or higher of the region of the game. Thats why you get people on here saying that they're fully updated but they have import games saying they need to update before they'll run.

Still, not a bad idea about trying it in maintenance mode. I'm not sure if it'll work but if it does it saves having to go out and find a wii music disk.

Edit: Oh well, it was worth a shot.

Anyway, once its unbricked install the homebrew channel via the twilight hack. There are many very nice guides on doing this here on afterdawn or you can go right to their site http://hbc.hackmii.com/

Once it's installed you can boot applications from this page http://wiibrew.org/wiki/List_of_homebrew_applications There are any number of useful things on there, including emulators, homebrew games and the region changer. I've never actually used the region changer but I believe when you run it it gives the option to install to any firmware level. So you should be able to just install it to 3.2u and not have to deal with the downgrader separately.

And as making the disks you already have work on 3.3, unfortunately once they're truncha-signed I dont know of any way to unsign them. Once you downgrade back to 3.2 they should work again but if you update to 3.3 again at some point in the future you'll have to either boot the games through gecko OS on the homebrew channel or re-rip the original games and burn them unmodified.

If this was the case then any out of region disc would brick a Wii system no matter what firmware you where at (that would mean a 3.3U Wii system would be bricked with a 3.3E/3.3J system update no matter what). Also if this was the case there would be no need to wait for an updated firmware on a game disc before you could unbrick a semi-brick.

But this is not the case.

EXAMPLE:

Lets say a user has a Wii system at 3.3U firmware. They use an out of region backup disc with a 3.3E update. The update will check the system and detect it is at 3.3 not 3.3U (if it detected at level X then it would overwrite 3.3U with 3.3E) and leave the system update as is with no semi-brick/full brick.

The update will then detect that there is no PAL news/weather channel and then request an update to install them (this is why users are asked to update even when the system version # is the same as the update).

So after the update you still have a working Wii system at 3.3U but have duplicated channels. Now if you run the game again you will not get an update request. It will check the system version and detect 3.3U and skip the system update becuase it is at 3.3 then check and detect that the PAL news/weather channels are installed and skip the update all together.

To prove this is the case you could use a duplicated channel remover disc and remove the PAL news/weather channels. Then when you run the PAL backup again you will be requested again to install the news/weather channels again that where just removed.

So in a way we both are right. The system part of the update goes by version # the channels go by region letter.

Ah, I see. It was a little more complicated than I thought.

Of course that means that Ceahorse is stuck. Without being able to get into the system settings I dont know of any way to install homebrew channel on a 3.3 wii. :[

SaveMii could possibly be a way. Supposedly there is a way to boot HBC with it. But I haven't look much into it.

for future ref.. When games come out that require an update i should use Jap versions to do the updates, and this won;t brick it?

Or should i not update?

in regards to the Jap Ver of wii music. Im still gonna try to find one and toss it in.. but i guess im just gonna have to wait it out.

i got my hands on a copy ofDisaater Day of Crisis (pal). I friend of a friend here is from Euro and had one recently shipped to him. ANyhow, when i put an unpatched Disc in the drive it requires an update. If i understand correctly, if i update it with a PAL, its just going to rebrick, is there anywat to start the update then pop the disc out and put in a JAP disc. Sorta fool the system?

No it is not possible. Your getting the update request to install is probably the PAL news/weather channel and will not effect the system part of the firmware at all.

Newest update.. I was able to get the Homebrew up and running.. Using http://sameo.webs.com/tutorials.htm

Now i don;t quite know much about homebrew having never used it. However i started taking the steps to do Win..... downgrader thinking that if i could downgrade i;d unbrick it aswell

I got the channel up but all the apps error message me "Not a vaild wii app."

I tried to use ggbarnum's suggestiong

NOT BEING ABLE TO see the installer/downgrader in the homebrew. they don;t show up.. both ways
Any ideas? Im thinking it might be somthing i have on the SD.. but i don;t know what must be kept and what can go

Right, I just ran this to see what happens and it would seem that in some versions of the homebrew channel you can't see the installer app. So I played around with it and got it working. What follows is how to get this to run if you don't see the file in the homebrew channel.

Copy the file IOS37-64-v2070.wad to the root of your SD card
Create a new folder in the apps folder on your SD card called CustomIOS, so the root of your SD card hould look like this...

IOS37-64-v2070.wad
Apps

IOS37-64-v2070.wad
Apps
../CustomIOS

Then copy the file cIOS37_rev3-Installer.dol to the CustomIOS folder you just created, then rename the file to BOOT.dol

Now put the card in your wii and run the homebrew channel. You should now see the REV3 installer application in the list of apps to run. Select it and follow the on screen instructions.

To get the downgrader to run do the same thing. Create a folder called Downgrader in the Apps folder, so you will then have:-

IOS37-64-v2070.wad
Apps
../CustomIOS
../Downgrader

then copy the file cIOS_Downgrader_v1.1.dol to the new folder you just created. Rename the file as BOOT.dol and run from the homebrew channel.

Hopefully this will sort it for you.
