Prologue
For some reason the ever increasing crowd of people in search for the ultimate media player have been disappointed by one application after another. The task is not a simple one for the developers as the complete package should feature an easy-to-use and comprehensive user interface, support for nearly every file format and punch to run the finest Full HD resolution. So far we ... [ read the full article ]

What exactly is the point in this. XBMC has already been released for OS X, along with Windows and Linux. They also have put it out for Apple TV and as a bootable Live CD.

Great review by Siggy. So true - you have the PS3 with a great interface and capability, but limited format support and then you have the Popcorn Hour device with great format support but a "bare-bones" user interface.
Couple of questions:
1. I thought that XBMC could also be used on a soft-modded XBOX.
2. Was full 1080p video tested over wireless g?
@dsgtrain
A little competition never hurt. How functional is XBMC for MAC OSX? Isn't it still a first gen beta? My personal experience with the Windows version wasn't that great. Crashed on me on startup and I've actually never been able to open it to a point where I could even view settings.
I will definitely be doing some more reading on this. A comparison of the Mac XBMC and Plex support is in order!
Thanks again for the review!

Your not wrong. I do have a PS3 and the amount of times I have wanted to play a 720p MKV file on it is countless. Supports all of the codecs, just not the container.
Personally I don't have much experience with XMBC and even less with OS X (actually make that none) so I can't comment on what one is better. It just seemed a little pointless to me, that's all.

I for one can't wait till a good stable version of XBMC for windows comes out. That way I could finally have a reason to get a mini desktop and make it a media server (and replace the modded xbox I now use).
@emugamer
Yes a soft modded xbox can run XBMC and many other things. There isn't too many things a chipped xbox can do that a soft modded one can't.
I believe that XBMC is possibly the best mediacenter application there is.

Yeah, although my XBOX is chipped, I was pretty sure you could run XBMC with a soft-mod.

....just stood out to me as being inaccurate. Would be misleading to anyone who was considering buying a used box off ebay to soft mod. The XBOX 1 may be hard to find new in retail stores, but they are everywhere used for dirt cheap and would be a fun toy to pick up just for the XBMC. Especially for those who don't want to make the jump yet into true HD and don't mind upscaling with the XBOX component cable.

Plex is a "fork" of XBMC -- rather than copying XBMC 1:1, it is redesigned to take Mac's unique stuff into account (most notably and most importantly the fact that Macs ship with a "standard" remote control, so you can design the whole system based on _one_ remote, thus most likely easing the usability planning a LOT).

I definitely wouldn't give up XBMC as my Xbox gets pretty fair use still today, though not as much with Tversity being capable for 99% of the things that I specifically need it for...hhmmm I wonder if XBMC would be good if ported/re-worked to the Linux side of a PS3? I know there is no RSX access (yet) but there is support for VLC in Linux or maybe I'm just not fully awake and talking crazy stuff that is just not possible without RSX. Eh, either way time to scour the net.
Edit: LOL first link and I find this..

xbmc is developed for the x86 cpu architecture. the ps3 is has a PPC architecture based Cell cpu.
Pretty obvious, BUT

The PS3 supports OpenGL ES 2.0 on Ubuntu, does XBMC support this? Just a thought...
Only to be stumped at

From what I know they support something almost like OpenGL ES 2.0 but its not under ubuntu, its on their regular os.
Ubuntus mesa drivers might support enough OpenGL for XBMC to run but it wont be hardware accelerated so youd be lucky to get more then one fps out of it.
Oh well, maybe if RSX access is available one day...but there is stuff out there being worked on for Linux more specifically Ubuntu which begs the possibility of it working it's way over to a PS3 Linux derivative

Looks overly complicated to me. vlc/mplayer do just fine. It looks pretty.. too pretty for somebody who likes bare bones power and functionality. IMHO that's where XBMC went wrong.. it's pretty but it's hard to find and access certain important functions, and things move around (or worse are removed/added) from release to release.

Which is why I just stayed on an old kernel/version of XBMC. If it ain't broke don't fix it, right?

Very true.. My xbmc is a very old and wonderfully stable version from 2003. It's the one that came on the "bonesX" installer. I haven't found another with better menu layouts and stability.

Holy crap lol, I think that's the same one I'm on since the bonesX disc was one of the first ones I used way back when for mine...it was quite a while ago though, and there is a possibility mine could just be an older one from Auto Installer Deluxe but same version. I honestly can't remember 100% but bonesX was definitely the first installer I used.
