The picture disappeard on my 360, and the store that NME chipped my 360 could not fix it. So it's practically worthless right now, so I might as well try sending it in for repair at MS and hope for the best. Before doing so though, I just wanna make sure that I am not running any risks in case they discover the chip. I mean, it aint illegal as far as I know... right?

You got to be kidding, right?

Oh where to start... first off, if by some chance they miss it, it wouldn't matter because you'd never see it again. MS swaps out the old drives with new Lite On drives now.

Secondly, those types of chips are illegal. They serve no other purpose than to circumvent security. Not to mention that using any code owned by MS, whether in part or whole, is also illegal.

And a sidenote, anyone who owns a modded console, modded or chipped, owns an illegal console for the same reason as stated above. It doesn't matter if backups are legal in your part of the world. If a modded console uses code which is owned by MS, and that code is modified, then it's illegal.

When you buy a console, you don't own any of the software, you're only buying the right to use it in the form it was released as.

then why do they only ban modded 360s from live and not fine them?

Will they fine me if I send this crap in to them and they discover it? I have heard numerous stories from people who sent in firmware modded 360s, one guy even had a burnt game inside the drive and he got it back in a cover along with a brand new 360. I dont care if I get the chip back, if I could get a working 360 back that would be awesome. So unless you think they would fine me or anything like that Imma send it in

Fine you... no. Don't worry about that.

If it were quick, easy, and cheap, MS would fine everyone they could. But it's not that simple for them.

Worse case, if they do detect that it's been tampered with in any way, they'll just ship it back to you, unrepaired.

An option might be to have that shop remove the chip. Give it to you and if you get back your original console or one that has a drive that the chip can work in they can put the chip back in. I wouldn't send the chip to MS just for the fact that you paid money for it and "might" not get it back. Um, no? Keep the chip and get a sticker if you need one and if it's possible make sure there's dust in there. All the 360's that have never been opened that I get are all pretty dirty around the fans and the cpu heatsink if they are from 06 and earlier.
Good luck with it.

XBOX Halo Ed. = DuoX2 w/250gb HD
Xbox 360 Red Elite 120GB HDD = no-stealth 1.6 & XBReboot V3 & 1TB usb hdd
PS2 Slim = freemcboot v1.8 - PSP Black Slim = 5.00m33-6
Wii = w/ Blue XCM ii-case, Wiikey2 & softmodded

So you say that when u send a console in for repair of lets say RROD and it has a samsung drive they will replace it with a liteon? is this always the case. i have a co worker that has rrod on an unmodded console and recently is thinking of modding for backups. but if they are going to replace his sammy with a liteon he wont be able to mod and if thats the case i might as well do the xclamp myself.

that's cool. so did you just tape a note on the xbox saying you wanted it back with the same type of drive in it or what?

And yeah I thought about having the store take out the chip, but they are so greedy man, they want like 60-70 USD for it.. Is it difficult for a person who doesnt know much about soldering to do it if I find some youtube guides or whatever?

alright. man I dunno what to do, I've wasted enough money in that store already but I guess the smartest move would be for them to take the chip out.. maybe I can cut a deal with them since I've been there so many times already.. I appreciate you guys answers though, so thanks

Eh i made each person i talk to read the note on my account every time i called in.

"customer wants same console or new console back, not a refurbished console"

3 weeks later i get an elite that came from london...

I know i'm an asshole on the phone to most people who give me generic answers (unplug it and plug it back in) and people who can't speak english (damn outsourcing). If you tell the "so called tech" that you are sure your problem is hardware related, and has absolutely nothing to do with software, then they tell you to clear the cache on your hard drive... you will get angry. When i get angry i throw technical facts like verbal missles.

Anyway i know i had a note on my account and they didn't follow through.... I guess just be nice to them, don't tell them you know anything about computers/technology and you'll probably get the same box back.

Oh... new plan...act like a total redneck and you'll get the same box back. "My xbox machine is broken"

If MS rejects your console you can get it reflowed. There's a guy on ebay i've bought a couple reflowed consoles from, he said he spent over $13,000 on machines to repair xbox's. So if you want the info let me know and i'll post it for you. He charges $35 for the reflow and $15 for return shipping.
