Hi, new ps3 owner and just hooked it up my an older rear projection tv (sony) via the component cables. Under "Display Settings", I selected components and select (ntsc preselected) 480p, 780p, and 1080i. All 3 were tested individually so it does display properly. Save the changes on the following screen. Placed a dvd and it started playing. The problem is that the picture switches between the standard widescreen mode to what appears to be stretched mode. The picture changes back and forth. I even tried deselecting the 480p and only selecting the 780p with no luck. With the 780p option selected, it gets these waves (interferances or lines) in the display inaddition to the picture switching back and forth.

Has anybody else experienced this or know if I'm missing a setting somewhere?

You may already have done it but just in case.
Go to
Settings >> Video Settings >> BD/DVD upscaler
and set it to
Full Screen.
Good Luck

...actually, I would think you'd have to put it in Normal mode. What this does, then, is preserve the 4:3 frames that are on the DVD (instead of "stretching" it like you say it's doing).

Maybe? I'm not too sure about these things; I haven't watched too many DVDs on my PS3.

thanks for the replies. I'm not in front of the tv but I do remember it being set at Normal. My tv is 16:9 and the dvd i'm view is a widescreen version. Just not sure why it tries to stretch the display every couple of mins. I'll give the "full screen" option a try later.

another update. I only have NTSC and 780p selected. The resolution issue is gone. However, i'm getting waves going diagonally upwards. The waves are not there when in the setup menu. Also, no issues exist when playing the ps3 game.

That IS strange... have you tried turning your upscaler OFF?

Your TV should have its own upscaler (most current ones do, I believe), so if you set it to "Aspect" or "Fullscreen" it might be able to upscale it without getting all these issues.

Just throwin' it out there.

sorry, took so long. Anyway, I did try all the upscaler option. Which probably doesn't help since it displays a message saying that the upscaler option will not be used on component connections. The only thing that stops it from stretching the resolution each time it flickers is if I only have the ntsc and 720p option on. As soon as I have the 480p enabled in addition to the above, it starts to flicker.

ntsc, 480p, 720p - flickers to stretch the vertical/horizontal resolution. no wavy lines.

ntsc, 720p - doesn't flicker. however, I get wavy lines going diagonally.

BTW, I'm using the component cable from monoprice. This is the component cable that also has the wii/ps2/ps3 connectors. I only have the ps3 connected to this.
