Ok here's my story...
I was playing call of duty 4 with a few mates (owning them too if i say so myself :D) And then suddenly the screen froze and the sound got stuck. So i proceeded to turning off the ps3.
I held down the power button, i heard a beep, and assumed my ps3 was going to go into standby mode. But it just stayed stuck on shutting down and continued to flash for 5mins+ :S
So i thought, what the hell i might as well turn it off from the back. So i did, started up the ps3 again and all seemed to be fine. But then the CoD4 disc icon didnt come up :( So i tried GTAIV to see if that would work... that didn't come up either :S
So here's me ****ing myself thinking im gonna have to pay out to get my ps3 repaired as its out of warrenty.
I leave the ps3 turned off for a few hours then come back but put an American Pie Dvd in, it came up :) and i could watch it :D
So i take it out, put GTAIV in and that comes up too, and i can play it :D
Halfway throught playing the game it freezes and im back to step one again :| So i put the a DVD in and it works etc. But i try putting a Blu-ray movie in and an error comes up (80029940) and says it cannot be played :/ So i try another Blu-ray and the icon just doesnt come up....
Anyways this is where i am at now... is my ps3 ****ed or not!? Sometimes it will show the disc, sometimes it wont, is the laser damaged from hard booting it?
My dad gave me this special laser disc cleaner, which is a disk that has a brush on it and cleans the laser... shall i try that? Meh dang these damn problems :@
Advice Please :)

Thought that that problem was fixed on the 2.2 Up Date early this year.

I know that you have searched the error also. Seams that Sony has not put out an explination for it. It seams that the problem was fixed in 2007. I see that you have been playing COD4 online, so you have a firmware update greater than 2.1 . Does not make since. If you or you & Sony figure this out, Please post what it was.
Reading the boards, Like you, everyone that got that error was while playing movies. Games worked fine. Last Forum post was in 2007 thow.

aha, yeah my ps3 is so random :/ One minute it will read nothing. I turned it on this morning and played COD4 for like 5mins. Then the sound kind of froze... i could still play but the only thing i could hear was a helicopter lol, no gun sounds or anything. After the end of the game and it was loading the new map it just completely froze up and now it won't read anything again :/

Yes, i actually went to the trouble of opening my ps3 to see if i could clean the lense, so my warranty sticker is voided, but i was out of warranty anyway so i don't see how this can affect it...
Anyways, now the long, painful wait untill december 4th till i get my new ps3 :) I think it was the new update 2.52 which caused this?

You guys are lucky, the Sony UK customer care didn't help me one bit when I tried explaining to them that the DualShock 3 controller bundled with my 80GB PS3 didn't work properly.

man thats lucky, i just sent my own in. But had to pay the 149US$ for out of warranty service. but they sent me another one in the most pristine condition ^_^. but now i have to send that one in tomorrow for servicing -__-!. the first time i messed it up, this time i don't know what happened. and initially my console was freezing during COD4. it completely crashed after returning to the XMB bar from watching a movie.
