Metal Gear Solid 4 Choke Hold Question.

When I make a guard freeze (go behind him and point my gun) how do I do a choke hold on him? Is it just the same as normal? Or is the only way to get him down is to use a gun or a knife?

Isn't there also an in-game Tutorial and VR simulator where you can practice your moves?

I haven't really played MGS4 but I didn't think that it would show me the moves. I mean, there are some guides online but they weren't really clear. So I thought I had to learn online. IDK if it teaches me in-game. I'll start playing soon (as in hours).
Sorry if I done a stupid post. I did search but it was really unclear in written.

press Square (i think) but don't hold it down hard just lightly. I know it's weird but that's how you do it

That's Metal Gear Solid 3. MGS4 uses R1.
But yeah, after holding him up, if you're standing, go up to him and lightly hold R1 (without holding L1, of course). Snake'll grab him and go into the choke hold. Hold the button harder and he'll start choking him.
If you're crouching when you press R1, Snake'll pull him down to a sitting position and do the same choke hold.
...and if you're moving while pressing R1, then Snake'll throw the person to the ground.

Oh.. So that R1 and L1 buttons are sensitive (if that's the right word to use). I thought only R2 and L2 was like that. By the way thanks.
Another question (sorry).
I'm playing Liquid Easy and when I get as close as possible to an enemy and point a gun (all the guns I have) he doesn't freeze. I end up touching him and get an alert. Do I need to do something first?

Uh... yeah, I'm not too keen on that. It usually works, but sometimes you might get something off... or something.
I dunno. How close are you when you aim at him? You can also try sneaking up on him while your gun is drawn (holding L1). Once you get in range, Snake should tell the person to freeze.
A third option is crouching while you sneak up on him. This way, you make less noise, and it doesn't affect your movements. After all, once he freezes, you can stand up and do what you want at your leisure.
...or you could just sneak up and grab him. That's a bit more prone to get you noticed, but if you've got fast fingers, you can almost always get it off before the soldier turns around.
So yeah, there are a fair bit of options here. There's even more ways to get him, like toss an ammo clip in front of him to distract him n' stuff.
And yes, all the buttons (save for R3 and L3) are pressure sensitive. The example I always bring to mind is The Bouncer (that really subpar Squaresoft game way back in the PS2 days), in which the strength of your moves were affected by how hard you pressed buttons.
Most games just don't use the sensitivity very much/effectively.

Ah... I just tried the holding up thing and it worked. Didn't like it much. Once I body checked the guard I crunched his groin (Snake and his low moves) and he seems to get knocked out. I always wanted to kill them with the knife :D

Yeah, I don't like that the crotch-pull is automatic, either. But I suppose it does make it easier to knife them.
