So guys... if this is true, this could be amazing.
I've looked up some info today, and it just might happen. The first source is a little iffy, but the second seems pretty credible.
The first source posted a chat transcript (supposedly) by c4eva claiming some info about the lite-on drive. Here it is:
Quote:
1.<AGP22> c4eva is here dudes !
2.<jam11> so c4eva do we have a new fw!
3.<AGP22> yeah c4eva the world is starving for your creativity.
4.<c4eva > liteon flash reading done 100%, new modified ixtreme fw will be available soon .
5.<AGP22> do you mean reading the liteon fw completely.
6.<c4eva > yes !
7.<jam11> so what next ? can you upload that fw?
8.<c4eva > No because it still needs modification!
9.<AGP22> can you give us an eta!
10.<jam11> yeah please give us an eta!
11.<AGP22> well!!.
12.<c4eva > No ETA, liteon is over !
Not quite sure if this means there won't need to be a solder, if somehow there could be a direct flash, but it's looking like he made a firmware for it specifically (if this is true).
So this seemed a little iffy. People on it are claiming it's fake, but others are also attempting to back it up.
But now here's the good news! (hopefully if it's true)
Team Xecuter is saying that a no solder solution for the lite-on will be released sometime next week. I've attached the source so you can view it, but lets hope that this happens.
Now this may just be a way to dump the key (and not any flash to the drive itself), but hey, it's atleast a start and it's one way to make that process much easier.
Quote:
Yes, a no solder solution is being released next week.
If you look, the individual who made that statement is using the official xecuter account! Sweet (hopefully)!

yup, I did see that since I've posted. I didn't know about that before.
It will be interesting to see if team xecuter also comes out with a product.

You guys realize that the "spear" is only for reading the firmware right?
Also, the idea behind the OP's thread was that there would be a new firmware for the lite-on and we will be able to write it back to it.
That "transcript" has been said to be fake.....for now. I'm not sure though.
They are working on it, but nothing has been said officially.
Read around.

I'm pretty sure most people do know that it is only for reading it, as right now there is no way to flash back onto it.
hopefully that will change though...

instead of creating a new thread, might semi-hijack this old one. Is there in the near future (1 year) going to be a firmware flash for liteons? In your own honest opinion?

You don't actually need solder or a spear to dump the key and inquiry data from a liteon.
Tinfoil and index finger FTW! Works everytime.

@ohyu
I would like to hope that within a year a liteon fw flash will be released. I hope so, but no one can honestly give a guess because no one has access to that info, progress that is being made, etc.
Also, team xecuter just came out with a solderless method of extracting the liteon key. Basically the same thing as the spear, but xecuter's version of it.

If the firmware for the lite-on drive like they say is in fact on a ROM, then a option for flashing these drives would never be possible. ROM (Read Only Memory) means exactly that, read only. The firmware is flashed onto a chip at creation which can not be flashed again (i believe the information is "burned" onto the chip). Think of cd-r's you burn the information onto it once and cannot do it again. This is how microchip's in many electronics work and this is what i interpreted the lite-on drives had.
If the drives are in-fact modable w/o replacing the chip, then the initial information that was released about the lite-on drives was incorrect (at least mis-stated). I would really like some more insight into this from someone who had some more knowledge of these drives, and has actually maybe tinkered w/one. But like i said before the drive was truly read-only it would be impossible to re-flash.
Edit: Just visited the #fw channel and it is apparently not read-only, it is stored no a flash-rom according to one user. So idk why people were calling it un-modable and saying it was read-only on here.
