My Xbox 360 just broke down, and instead of sending it in and paying $100 i would rather just purchase a new dvd drive. Can I just buy a new drive and put it in or do I have to do a bunch of other stuff to the new drive? If so, How do I do that stuff?

you cant just swap them, you need to spoof the drive into thinking its the original one,if its a lite on, for this you need some details from your lite-on. i shall recommand the same as was recommended to me (the hardware hasnt arrived yet so i cant confirm it works but i see no reason it wouldnt)

you need both the xtractor and the spear or the xttractor and some soldering experience, i opted for the xtractor and spear so i didnt have to solder
if you get stuck search the site for lite on youll find 101 posts like yours :) goodluck
if its not a lite-on you still need a few details as the drives are married to the motherboard but its much easier just search around for spoof and youll get lots of detailed hits (and dont forget to grab the textbook.pdf its invaluable

umm, hes not talking about the lite-on drive, he states in this thread title its a hitachi drive. so to replace that one, you can either buy a new drive and flash your old drives FW to the new one, or just buy the EXACT same model drive (if yours is a 49 buy a 49) and take the PCB board from your drive and put it into the new drive and you wont have to flash it. however, this might not work if its the board that went out in your current drive.

I have the same problem. My xbox just keeps on saying open tray even though there is a game in it. I opened it being that my warranty was over and I am trying to figure out if I buy the same exact drive will I have to flash it or not. Its driving me crazy can anybody help?

Are you trying a burned game? If so that might be a POT Calibration problem, which is relatively easy to fix.
