Pros (at least for me):
-Multimedia monster, plays a wide variety of media.
-Extremly fast load times for BD playback, I've heard other first gen. standalones are quite slow.
Cons:
-Cannot bitstream HD audio, I'm content with onboard decoding though.
-No Multi channels outs. Until recently I could not enjoy HD audio because my old receiver was incapable... it did however have multi-channel inputs, which can accept uncompressed LPCM.

Pro & Con. Blue-Tooth communications. Ahead of its time. Dont have to point the remote control at the PS3 (not restricted to line of sight). Not many compatiable remotes for the PS3. Can use blue-tooth head sets with it also. Pro - Sony has not locked down accesories. Any manufacture can make equiptment for it. The main one is Hard Drives. Con - It is able to do so many things that it may seam complicated to some people.

Pros:
When the PS3 was first released it's RRP was the same as the stand-alone Blue-Ray drives on the market at that time. So not only were people buying a console they were buying a blue ray player included in the package! Big money saver!
Also note that the xbox 360, although can play HD-DVDs, the drive has to be purchased separately, making the PS3 a bit more tempting.
Wireless bluetooth controller, no more wires, except for recharging.
Wireless as well as wired LAN.
Firmware can be upgraded easily online, no need to send to a shop. Keeps the PS3 up-to-date. This also includes firmware changes to the blueray drive, something you cannot do with the standalone player you buy.
Multi core processor, think t has 8 cores, one of which is apparently disabled??? Allows the PS3 to do more faster. X box 360 has less cores, think ppl said it has 3.
Cons:
Orignally the US and Japan PS3s had the PS2 Emotion chip, this allows hardware emulation of PS2 games (backward compatible). The big con for European markets was that Sony went from hardware to software, they removed the chip and used a program to emulate the PS2. This is not as good as hardware. The PS2 chip cost them $60 each, and yet in European the console was $120 more expensive! when it didnt have this chip.
Overheating problems for some
Blue ray drive breakdowns, not sure how common this is.
First retail units came with Sixaxis controllers but no Dualshock, somethjing which was standard with the PSOne and PS2!
Selling off of exclusive titles, now PS only games are availble for Xbox and PC etc.

Hmmm well you may be hard to find people that aren't very biased in here to answer your question. Not really an expert on the technical side of the machine to say, I can do for the console in general, but not sure if that's what you are after.

Pros;
1. Excellent media centre - movies, music , downloads...etc
2. Blu Ray Drive.
3. Wireless Controllers.
4. Wireless Lan Connections - Xbox 360 doesnt have this - have to spend another £60 for it!!
5. Bluetooth.
6. FREE online gaming - again xbox charges for this.
Cons;
1. Technical Skills required for some things.
2. Cooling fan - Mine comes on when its not hot and its REALLY LOUD - turn the ps3 off then on again with no time to cool down and its gone.
3. Its quite a big console compared to previous playstations and xbox, sure they will do a small one soon.
4. Not mnay good games at present, the goods are pretty much the same genre ie FPS.
5. Wish i could store my games and play of the HDD
6. not ps2 compatible on ps1 (apart from the old 60gb consoles)
