I have a Wii for my son for Christmas and debating on weather to get this: D2Sun 3.0 with Wii-Clip V12 Combo Pre Soldered or use the Twilight hack.

I was able to get the FreeMcboot up and running on his PS2 so i figure i should be able to get the Twilight hack going as well. My concerns are will I always need the actual Zelda game to make this work or just need it initially to install it?

If I am comfortable opening up the wii would it be better to us the Wii Clip?

I am new to this and never used a Wii so really open to suggestions from people with experience.

Thanks

Yes you need the Zelda game. I would recommend the wii clip, because it is fast and easy. As far as opening your wii, you need a tri-screwdriver.

So i would need the ZELDA game every time I wanted to load a backup? That would be annoying. I do have a tri-screwdriver. So is the D2Sun 3.0 good?

To answer your question, you don't need the Zelda game every time you boot a game because once you proceed with the Twilight Hack, it will install the Homebrew channel on your Wii. Also, because I have a D2CKey in my Wii, I would advise you to get a modchip instead, because the Homebrew Channel on the Wii, combined with the backuploader will not allow you to play that many backed up games. Here is a website that simulates opening the wii and installing a clip: http://www.wiisilon.com/simulation.html

Good Luck!

I have both methods installed on my Wii. I happen to have a WiiKey, before any of the pre-soldered/clip solutions were available and it is a pain to solder with the close pinpoint connections. Keep in mind, those probably aren't there anymore, plus the pins are cut off the chipsets of newer consoles.

You may want to try using the Twilight Hack first. You will need an SD card and the proper copy of the Twilight Princess game. (As suggested you could either buy a used copy or try your luck at a rental chain.) Check out the official TP hack site for specifics on the disc.

When you first boot up the Wii, do not update it! Newer updates my render the Homebrew and TP Hack useless. They are confirmed working on 3.3 firmware as of now.

Check the Sticky for specifics, but once you load the TP Hack, load the HB Channel wad and then you won't need TP anymore. You can install Wads from the HB Channel, load backups, and even update HB Channel through your Wii's wireless connection.

Also, the backup loader program no longer needs DVD-X or patches to run, so disregard any of that information, as the program seems compatible with everything except for DVD-DL games, such as Super Smash Bros.

appreciate all the help and suggestions. I already have an SD card and I think i will attempt the TP hack first and see how that does.

Below are pros and cons between modchips and the boot launcher.

Modchip Pro:
Easy to install with WiiClip.
100% game compatibility with same region games as unit.
99% compatibility with out of region games.
Harder for Nintendo to detect and block.

Modchip cons:
More expensive then using a boot launcher.
Cut pins (on D2B) chipsets block the use of Wiiclip. Makes the solder instillation a little harder.
Epoxy on new D2E chipsets make it harder to install WiiClip or Solder a modchip to it (need to remove Epoxy which can be dangerous to do/Let a pro do it).

----------------------------------------------------------------
Boot launcher Pro:
cheap to install.

Boot launcher Cons:
90% compatibility (compatibility list HERE).
Easier for Nintendo to block it from working (as of now the new 3.4 is said to disable it from working/If this has been confirmed yet I don't know).
----------------------------------------------------------------

I personally would use a Modchip if you have the $ to buy it and a WiiClip. You might want to open up the Wii and check to see what chipset you have and if it is a new D2E check to see if there is any Epoxy on the board (black stuff covering part of the chipset pins that the WiiClip makes contact with or you solder to).

I just found someone and talked to them on craigslist who has the Zelda Twilight Princess game still sealed and never used for $30. I think for that price i will go that route for now. I dont need 100% compatibility just a few games for my son to play.

Thanks for the compatibility list its very helpfull and the pros and cons.

The easiest route to go would be renting it for a few bucks at a video rentel place.

Larry, I thought about just renting it but I might want to do someone elses for them and to have it just in case for some reason something gets deleted or I have to re-install.

I also am a little slow when it comes to things so I want to make sure I have no time restraints lol

There is a Region Free application that can be launched through HB Channel, or you could patch the backup with RegionFrii to change the region coding (ie. Japan to USA).

I think it has Wiimote support or you can use a GC controler.

It should work.

If it was region patched and the region patcher uses the trucha signature and you have 3.3 firmware it might not work.

Users scrub games for torrent download. It deletes the padded part of the game disc leaving only the game information on it.

All you have to do is burn the backups as normal.

The only patching that should be done is WiiBrickBlocker.

If you have a PAL disc and want to play it on your NTSC Wii just start it and see if it boots. If it boots in black and white or it scrolls, reboot the game disc again but go into the WiiGator options and change FORCE NTSC to YES then boot the game.

HERE is a game comaptibility list for WiiGator 0.3 beta/gamma.

I just installed everything and when i go to the wiigator channel that was created put in my disk and then click load game it says : DVD no DVD or something like that. its hard to read because it seems there is something else overlapping that. I burned the file using imgburn 4 x speed using verbatim dvd-R. i do have firmware 3.3 i just checked so that might be the issue. my SNES and NES roms work but had problems with N64 roms. I think i have everything installed correctly will try another game once i have a another backup finished to test.

I have had some games not boot properly with the installed WiiGator channel.

Try booting the game backup via Homebrew Channel then the WiiGator boot loader that is listed in the Homebrew Channel menu. If this is a PAL game you might need to force it to NTSC.

If you still have issue try booting via Homebrew Channel then WiiGator boot loader again but when the boot loader comes up just press B on the Wiimote. This will reboot the Wii and let you boot via normal Disc Channel. So after you press B and the Wii reboots try launching the game via normal Disc Channel.

Ok i have Mario Kart as well and tested it and had no luck. I even did as you suggested tried both wiigators launchers even the one in the homebrew channel. I even tried just loading it like a regular game and no luck. It keeps saying No DVD. I have uninstalled the cios wad and reinstalled with no luck. I used the guide and was able to install the homebrew channel with Twilight Hack and am able to play snes games and duckhunt but the wiigator isnt working. I have version 3.3 just bought the Wii like a month ago and have done no updates. could the october update already be installed on this machine? I dont think it would because it allowed the Twilight hack to install homebrew channel. Any ideas or things to try let me know.

ohh and when i try the (winoko)the other backup launcher it will not allow me to install it says something about an error occured in network and cant install

thanks

Uninstall any previous cIOS you have installed plus DVDx if you had installed that. Also delete any bootloader files you used previously from your SD CARD.

Go HERE and download this file. Now extract the file and place the folders inside the boot loader folder onto the root of your sd card (copy the folders inside the boot loader folder not the bootloader folder itself).

Place the sd card into the Wii and start the hombrew channel. In the hombrew channel menu choose to install the cIOS listed. After it has installed the cIOS try booting the backup game via the bootloader listed in Homebrew Channel.
