I was hoping for a "if you're completely new thread" in the stickies but I didn't happen accross one. I've been playing the regular xbox with the x3 and the WII with the wiikey but now my GF bought me an 360 Arcade so it's time to move on.

I'm looking for the basic information on which model to buy (may be returning that arcade edition) along with min-maxing my chances of getting a stable platform that can be modded. Looks like this current box has a lite-on drive in it from the lot #. Good/bad/indifferent?

I know I have some reading to do, but if anyone can point me to a recap, I'd appreciate it.

TIA

In the same boat. It's looking pretty bleak right now as far as flashing any new systems, but I'm also interested in what someone else has to say.

I have flashed consoles for trade if you are interested. Keep all your cords, controllers, hardrives etc. and I can trade you a sammy or hitachi unit with flashed firmware for a small fee or a benq with hdmi for a bit more. I will warranty the console also. PM me if you are interested.

To answer your original concern... do this-----position the console vertically and pop the faceplate off by grasping the top edge with your fingernails or pads of your fingers and pull with a brisk force, you will hear a high pitched snap. Do the same to the bottom of the faceplate and set the faceplate aside. Position the console horizontially and focus on the section where the dvd drive is. Beneath the right hand side of the disc tray will be an oval like area. Shine a light or even your cell phone into the oval like area. If the wire you see is white then BINGO you are in luck and the drive is probally a Benq which is ridiculously simple to flash. If the wire is yellow you most definetely have a Newer Lite On that has a ROM firmware and must be replaced with another drive. If the oval area has no visible wire but is blocked with black plastic then you have a late model hitachi, also flashable. Goodluck!
