A lot of the tutorials are unclear about a few things?

Okay basically, I just purchased a Phat PSP that's upgraded with firmware 4.05. I've previously modded three PS2's, and that's it.. So figured it'd be pretty cool to mod my PSP.
So obviously, everyone wants firmware 1.5.. It took me a while to find the thread that made it clear that you can't mod anything above 3.x without a Pandora's battery and a Magic memory stick.
Most of the MMS tutorial threads require another PSP with CFW.. Im in a very small town, im pretty certain no one here has one already. Definitely no one i know, at least. I can purchase a pandora's battery though, and i have a plain memory stick. Is there anyway to make a MMS with only pandora's battery?
Furthermore, why aren't there any tutorial threads on hardmodding your battery?
Also, there's two types of motherboards that aren't compatible. I haven't seen a thread that clarifys how to check what kind of motherboard you have. :/
From what i understand, the firmware doesn't make much of a difference after 3.x firmware.. And i'm still not completely clear on what i need to do or where to go for software and downgrading downloads :[
Thanks for the help, I do appreciate it.

I have to respectfully disagree. The tutorials here are just fine.
I'm betting 2/3 of EVERYTHING I know about PSPs came from this website. The other 1/3 came from teaching myself with hands on experience, youtube, and Dark-AleX's website/wiki.
You can't expect to just read one tutorial and know everything about it. You'll need to consult multiple multiple threads, other websites, watch videos, etc...
Ok, to address the issues in your post:
Quote: Okay basically, I just purchased a Phat PSP that's upgraded with firmware 4.05. I've previously modded three PS2's, and that's it.. So figured it'd be pretty cool to mod my PSP.
Modding a PS2 is harder then modding a PSP in my very humble opinion. So that should be some type of relief for ya.
Quote: So obviously, everyone wants firmware 1.5.. It took me a while to find the thread that made it clear that you can't mod anything above 3.x without a Pandora's battery and a Magic memory stick.
No, everyone does not want 1.5. They want CFW...period. If you have, say, 4.01 CFW you have access to the 1.5 kernel via the VSH menu, recovery mode, etc...
If you want the most up to date version you'll want 5.00 M33-3.
And I'm really not sure about the above 3.x needing a jigkick and magic stick. My entire time with the PSP has had to do with magic sticks and jigkicks :)

Not true. Right here is a GREAT guide on how to make a magic memory stick from scratch. On top of that it's on the "READ SECOND (rules 1st) Ultimate sticky" which you should have read after reading the rules thread and before posting anything:
Here's the magic stick guide I used to make my first one:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/708959
Quote: Furthermore, why aren't there any tutorial threads on hardmodding your battery?
Have you ever tried typing out an electronic schematic? If not, try making a text only guide to modding a ps2. You'll get my point real quick.
This is where a video comes in really handy. Youtube ftw! :)
Here's a very good tutorial on how to make a jigkick (pandora) battery.
I do want to say this real quick though:
This guy is TERRIBLE about opening his battery. Listen to him grunt and moan and grunt some more for like 5 minutes. I've never heard of someone getting their ass kicked by an inanimate object a fraction of their size lol. That being said, here's the link:

Quote: Also, there's two types of motherboards that aren't compatible. I haven't seen a thread that clarifys how to check what kind of motherboard you have. :/
2 types of mobos? I don't know where you got those numbers but I wouldn't trust any post from the person who told you that again. There's way more then 2. But as of this posting there's only 1 notorious mobo you have to watch out for. The TA-088v3.
Again, had you read "READ SECOND (rules 1st) Ultimate sticky" you would have found the post about this. There's also Dark-AleX's psp wiki on mother boards which you can find here:
http://alek.dark-alex.org/pspwiki/index.php/Motherboards
There's not a lot of guides on it just because of the fact there's no EASY way to tell what mobo a PSP has. Being yours is a phat you're safe. If it's a slim then there's some steps you can take to sort of identify.
For example I just modded one of my friends PSPs last weekend. I had nothing to go off of other then it was a PSP slim (meaning it COULD have had the v3 in it.) However it had OFW 3.9 on it, so I knew for a fact it wasn't a TA088v3 because of that.
Here's the most informative post about identifying what mobo you have:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/709168
Quote: From what i understand, the firmware doesn't make much of a difference after 3.x firmware.. And i'm still not completely clear on what i need to do or where to go for software and downgrading downloads :[
Again, wrong. Major version revisions are there for a reason. When the first number in a version gets changed something major has happened to the product whether it be an addition, removal, or total revamp of something.
Here's a guide on software versioning:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_versioning
Here's an entire list of everything that's happened in every revision Sony's Official Firmwares:

The point I'm trying to make, Hack_Zero, is the information is out there, but the amount you learn is proportional to the time you put into researching it. Becoming proficient in anything requires you to do this. Keep your chin up, grab a couple of your favorite caffeinated beverages, and start clicking away. Oh...wiki's and google are just as much your friend as forums are :)
Hope this helped you out.
You know I give you the mad, phat, superfly, stupid-dope, dumb-ass, retarded, bomb-sh*t props!

No offense, but I most certainly didn't read just one guide. I read a ton. I read several off max console, here, and psp-hacks. My biggest issue was because i rushed through them and had a hard time understanding fully. For example, I was under the impression that you needed a pandoras battery first to make the Magic memory stick, which made a ton of the guides completely confusing. And almost every guide is completely different but try to pack all the PSP & firmware types in one thread. They all use different methods and are all for different models, but were generally unclear.

Yea, lol, once again i was just confused. There's a lot of different posts with different info. I read a post off max console that told a guy he needed to downgrade his PSP to 1.5 before being able to install CFW, so i figured that's what every model needs to do first before installing CFW.

Yea, I did read that thread but the second part of it confused me, It said there's three parts, but didn't mention you only needed to choose one based on your situation. Lol, and at that point i was still thinking I needed pandora's battery before making the MMS.

A: No. The PSP-2000 models with the TA-88v3 motherboard or PSP-3000 models cannot be loaded with Custom Firmwares at this time.

A: A PSP-2000 model with a new motherboard that will not run work with Pandora at this time.

I did my research, seriously. I just had a hard time getting everything straightened out with what motherboard and what model I needed to use. I figured most of it out last night, but your post just helped greatly. Thanks a ton :]
One more thing though, just for clarification..This is the complete process I'll need to go through to install M33 v5.0 on my phat PSP with OFW4.5?:
-Use Easy Installer to convert your ProDUO into a MMS, and install "Universal Unbricker".
-Cut off PSP, Insert Magic Memory stick
-Make sure Pandoras battery is completely charged, insert it.
-Plug in charger to be safe
-Hold L and start up PSP
-Back up NANDS
-Install 3.71 M3-2 CFW from menu
Then i'm not fully positive of where to get 5.0 M3-3 to upgrade it. Also, can i just replace the 3.71 M3-2 file on the MMS with the 5.0 M3-3 file and install it directly?
Thanks a lot, i really just appreciate you taking the time to answer :]

Lol, sorry for the double post. I messed up all the quotes in my last post and don't know how to edit. >_>
Also, what should I do after installing M33-3 v5.0? Do I need to install any bootloaders? & what're some good apps you suggest or recommend?

Steps to take when hacking a psp (short version)
1)Make your magic memory stick using This Program (I'd suggest doing it on an XP machine. It gets bitchy on a vista system)
You'll get asked simple questions.
Follow the steps. When you get the option of continuing to pandora installer, do that. Couple more questions.
Then when you get the option for universal unbrick (should be option 4) do that.
****Please Note****
Your magic mem stick isn't created till you get this:
Write ABS Sector 0x10 to 0x1E7
Are You Sure ?[Y]
2)Make your pandora battery. Here's the best guide i've found. Just make sure to fast forward past the first 5 minutes of him struggling to open the damn thing lol.
Note: The videos I made are x1000 better then any vid guide I've seen...can't wait to get 'em up here for people to use! :(
3)Turn off psp and unplug from wall
4)Insert magic mem stick
5)Ensure your battery is fully charged! Put in the battery. If it comes on by itself then the jigkick battery was made right.
6)Plug in the AC adapter (strictly as a precaution). Follow install steps. Top option should be to install 3.71 custom firmware.
7)When you're all done, download this file i made to update your PSP to 5.00 M33-3. Everything you need, including instructions, is in it.
8)Un-jigkick your battery back to a regular battery using the graphite pencil technique.
9)Post any other questions you may have.
10)Send 1 million dollars in small, unmarked, non-consecutive bills to me.
11)Enjoy.

So i basically had the process right :]
I'll get to the million dollar part later <_<
Once i've used my pandora's battery and MMS, I won't need it again, will I? I can update M33 straight through the PSP's firmware, right?
As for the other questions part, I was looking through M33 releases and stuff. Why does every M33 release include the PSP's official firmware? And why does each one include a v1.5 kernal?
Last question, I don't have any PSP games. I read a post that said you needed a UMD to boot a ISO file, is that correct? & will I be able to boot ISO files directly off my memory stick once i have M33-3 5.0 installed?
Sorry for the flood of questions. I like learning >_>

Million dollars should be top priority and comes first! I'm a poor white geek trying to make a livin lol.
The only reason you'd need your jigkick battery and magic mem stick again is if you wanted to hack a friends PSP or unbrick yours (bricking means your internal files get jacked up and your psp doesn't turn on. while not a common occurrence it does happen occasionally).
Once you have CFW on your system all future updates will be ran through your PSP without the use of the MMS or the jigkick. Just make sure you don't upgrade to OFW or you WILL have to do all that stuff again.
The M33 releases (AKA your custom firmware) RUNS off of OFW. All the perks you get from the new OFW's are still kept while the M33 part just takes out the 'you can't do this and this and this' crap.
So 5.00 would indicate what OFW it's derived from, M33 indiciates that it's custom firmware and -3 would indicate there's been 2 revisions made to it so far (in other words they've fixed a ton of bugs/glitches). You almost always want the highest M33-# you can find for that OFW.
You'll find out that when sony comes up with a new version (in our case when 6.0 comes out), you'll NEED a copy of the 6.0 firmware in order to upgrade to CFW 6.0 M33-1 (when it gets written of course). Get it?
The reason they contain the kernel, to my knowledge, is so that people can run the original homebrew applications that REQUIRE the 1.5 kernel. Homebrew was huge when it hit the scene initially. Tons of good apps were made. People like them and want to continue running them.
My experience with those kind of homebrew apps and the 1.5 kernel itself is extremely limited. You have to realize i've only been doing this for the better part of a month. (though those first 2 weeks were like insane learning/cramming)
You do not need a UMD to boot .iso/.cso files (that are psp games). You drop them straight into your ISO file located on your mem stick and access the from your games menu on you XMB (Cross Media Bar). They'll be in the mem stick sub option.
You know I give you the mad, phat, superfly, stupid-dope, dumb-ass, retarded, bomb-sh*t props!

Thank you, I think that clears up most things for me.
So, will i be able to go online with downloaded games with CFW? I know the PS2 had DNAS, and you had to go through a special process to go online with burned games.
There's so many apps for CFW that i've seen floating around, poploader, devhook, ect. What do you suggest I get? :x

PSP games are in .iso format (which is just a straight rip of a UMD disc) or .cso format...which is a compressed iso.
If you're just going to be dealing with games, then no you don't need any other homebrew apps.
If you want to play legacy systems like NES, MAME, SEGA, etc...you'll need emulators obviously. Those are all very readily available and easy to find with plenty of 'how to' tutorials.
As far as going online with illegit games, that I'm not sure. Not a very big 'online psp game' fan. I have my pc for that :)
Worst case scenario is you try it, it doesn't work, and you move on.
Best case...it works, and you move on. lol.
I would like to say that if you want to do PSX (PS1) games on your psp (which is, IMHO, the BEST thing about PSPs), you WILL need popsloader.
Should you venture into the PSX world, send me a PM and I'll give you a link to a decent tutorial i wrote up on it k? :P

quick edit:
If you download games, and like 'em, plz buy 'em. I'm kind of an advocate of that.
I bought crisis core, the metal slug anthology, GTA Vice City Stories, and a few others b/c i really enjoyed them.
Just saying that if we don't support sony a little, they're not gonna be pumping out new and awesome games for us :P
My 2 cents.

I'm interested in far more than just playing games, lol. I'm curious as to what apps there are, psp-hacks has a nice list, but im sure there's more than that. And yes, i'm very interested in PSX games, MGS1 in particular. I've supported sony plenty, I've got a PS3 with 8 games.
I bought it 60gb new.
599.99+(59.99*8)
And i bought a PSP :]
I'll be back shortly to respond, i have to run to get some food at the store.
