Hi: Looking to mod my wii, checked serial # for chip set , but returned a 50% chance of G2C-D2C.
So Then I cracked wii open and discovered a chip set of G2c-D2E.
What Mod chip is recommended ? for playing backups. also my 2nd part to this question is there a reliable soft mod that i could use on this unit ??
thanks
Ragweed

Yes, you can SoftMod it, but it depends on your Firmware version.
What firmware is your Wii?

d2Pro ver3 or Wiikey 2 will work for D2E chipsets.
As well there is a boot launcher (softmod) that is 90% compatible with games as of now.
Do some searching in the forums for further information. It is out there.

try to install the Homebrew Channel, and if you succeed, use Wainiko's firmware downgrader to downgrade to 3.2U

You do not need to downgrade the Wii if the Oct 23rd update has not been installed.
If he hasn't updated the Wii firmware via Internet since Oct 23rd then he should be perfectly fine.
Just make sure you do not update the Wii anymore. Use WiiBrickBlocker on all game backups.
Things you need...
SD CARD preferably 2GB formated FAT16 (default windows setting)
Zelda Twilight Princess game disc.
Twilight Hack & Home brew Channel (link to files linked below).
Boot Loader files (linked below).
Install the Homebrew Channel. You can get both Twilight Hack and Homebrew Channel HERE. Follow the read me file included with the downloads to install it.
After you install the Homebrew Channel you do not need any of the files so formate the SD CARD again to FAT16 then follow the directions below.
Download the Boot Loader files HERE.
Extract the downloaded file and then copy all folders inside the boot loader folder to the root of the SD CARD (do not copy the boot loader folder itself only copy the folders inside the boot loader folder to the SD CARD root).
Now place the SD CARD into the Wii and start the homebrew channel.
You will have a list of applications in the menu.
1st choose the cIOS installer to install the custom firmware. Follow the on screen instructions and when it is finished it will reboot back to Wii menu.
For this next part I have included 2 ways to launch the boot loader. You can do it via Homebrew Channel or install a boot loader channel to the Wii menu and all you will need to do is boot the backup disc through that channel.
Option 1) launch boot loader with Homebrew Channel. Start the Homebrew Channel then go to the WiiGator 0.3 Gamma boot loader in Homebrew Channel menu and launch it.
Option 2) Install WiiGator 0.3 Gamma bootloader channel. Start the Homebrew Channel and choose to launch wad manager in the Homebrew Channel menu.
Go through the on screen instructions. Choose SD CARD for the wad directory. In the WAD list (there should only be 1) go to BackupChannel_0.3-ForceNTSC.wad and press + to install the channel.
After it is done it will reboot back to the Wii Menu and you should have the boot loader channel in it to launch from.

Thanks for the step by step, i did read other instructions abou tthe numbers or something and having to edit something. I think that is what the zelda disk is for. Is that step missing from this? Im looking to try this out this week, but am just having trouble narrowing down instructions, I have searched site and found a bunch of different versions and ways, as well as google, but some have certain steps that others dont and so on.
Or if there is a sticky somewhere that users had good success I would love a link. I will keep looking, but if someone can help out it would be much appreciated
Just wondering who has done it and what they did

In my opinion, SoftModing is better since it costs nothing. I'd say the best firmware for SoftMod is 3.2, since it's the most compatible.

You need a SD Card plus some type of reader or adapter for the PC to read the SD Card. So softmodding is not free. But if price is what your comparing then Softmodding is the cheapest way to go.
If your comparing game compatibility and vulnerability then a Modchip is the way to go. Modchips have a better game compatibility and are less vulnerable to be effected by Wii System updates.
