I bought a HDTV a few months ago, and remember reading that Smasung do make good TVs, so I'd say yes this'll be good for using with the PS3. I actually ended up buying a Toshiba cos it had the same specs at a lower price comapred to the Samsung I was looking at.
The real question you should be asking is, Do I need a huge 40" or would a 32" be fine :P

Both tv's will do the job perfectly specification wise. The samsung has a better contrast ratio than the SONY but for some reason the SONY's always show better (depends on the model though). I read somewhere that the 24p cinema thing on the SONY brings out the quality in the ps3 if that helps make up your mind. I personally have a aquos because they didn't have the SONY i wanted in stock. and don't bother with the hertz thing, sales people annoy the hell out of me with that. its "implied" and very few things even go that high. most are at 60Hz or less anyways. LCD is still in its baby phase man. -___-!

For freesat you will need a satellite dish not an aerial.
As for plasma vs lcd, it doesnt really matter, all electronics are designed to die after 5 years, the term "They dont build them like they used to" is so true these days. this makes sure that these companies keep on making profits.
Plasma - WIll most definately run out after 5 years, after that the plams need changing if you can do that, if not then a new TV will need to be bought.
LCD - again expect it ot last 5 years, but chances are that it can last a bit longer. LCD TVa have thousands of diodes, each one consisting of 2 colours, it only takes one of these to burn out to make a dot appear on your screen.
I would therefore go for a LCD TV, just remember that Freesat uses a different satellite than Sky, so if you do have a SKy dish which isnt in use, it'll need adjusting.
