Xbox 360 completely dead after X-Clamp

I have an xbox which wouldn't display a picture. The console turned on and you could hear sounds from the startup and everything, but there was no picture. It was not an rrod. I read on the internet that the problem was in the gpu and was similar to an rrod. I tried to fix it with an x-clamp fix, but now the console won't even turn on. When I push the power button, all it does is that it blinks green in the middle for lika half a second, then I get three red lights blinking and the cooling fan also stops.
Have I killed my xbox? If so what did I do wrong, so that I don't make the same mistake if I were to try this again.

sometimes if you dont' use nylon washers on either side of the motherboard when you do the xclamp and you overtighten the screws you will short out something which turns off your power supplies 12volt output. check to see if your powersupply blinks from orange to green and then back to orange when you power up. What is your secondary code? Also are you sure its 3 red lights and not 2 red lights? the 2 red would indicate you screwed up the xclamp on the cpu as I think that is where the temperature sensor is. Give us more info, plz.

When I push the power button, the psu blinks from orange to green for about a second, then back to orange. The fans rotate for about a second, then they stop and there is no life in the box, exept for the three blinking lights. Don't know about the secondary code. Yes it is 3 red lights. They are blinking with about 1/3 second intervall. It would make sense about the short circuit. I used metal washers only and tightened them pretty hard. After reading your post I tried to loosen the screws on the x clamp. I noticed that some of the copper around one of the screw holes had been scraped of by a spring washer. It looks like I might have tightened some of the screws a bit to hard and maybe damaged the motherboard.

In my experience, yours and others may differ, the damage is not usually sustained unless you do something crazy ( like I did the first time I had that problem, I jumped out the 12 volt supply and cooked a bunch of mosfets straight away, its wicked tough to put the smoke back in them once you release it, hehehehe) anyway add some nylons and don't tighten to hard and you might be okay. when you have it apart to install the nylons check to see if you cracked the gpu. if so it will be an obvious crack accross the polished part or the die. I have seen that from some guys over tightening the screws.which means the board i generally scrap unles you have a replaced reballed gpu but that gets tricky replacing them. Lastly check your secondary code, you are probally getting a powersupply error, (maybe 101 I can't remember)if that persists you prob burnt a few mosfets like me. they are very easy to test. Keep me posted.

Ok, I think the code is 0002, which I read somwhere is a network interface problem. I turned on the xbox and pressed and held the sync button and pressed the dvd rom button and it showed four lights. I released the dvd button and pressed it again and there was still four lights the second time. Same the third time and on the fourth time it showed two lights. The psu works fine. I've tested it with a different xbox.

I don't understand why I get a network error, as the problem was that I couldn't get a picture. I don't know what a mosfet is, so I don't know how to check them. Thanks for the replies btw.

based on your description and my past exeperienc you do in fact have a short, regardless of what the secondary code says. I have had this exact problem. I think one of your heat sinks is too tight and could either be shorting cuz you have no nylons or possible quished so badly is is shorting layers. I did this exact thing before. loosen the screws or just add nylons. Did you check for a crack in the gpu? post pics. If you are in need of a replacement mobo and drive combo let me know, I have tons.

Thanks man that would be great. I think the motherboard is history. I just removed the x clamps and all the screw holes for the heatsink screws are missing part or most of the copper around. Apparently the spring washers have "drilled" themselves into the motherboard. I think I have made permanent damage to the mobo, because I tried to turn it on even without heatsinks and no screws though the heatsink holes and I still get the same error. I will try to take some pictures tomorrow. It is way to late now and I have to get up early tomorrow. Thanks for all your help man. I think I would be really interested in a replacemment mobo and a dvd drive.

Hey would those spare motherboards/drives you talk of be able to work on Xbox LIVE?
