Connecting my laptop to a Tv

I need some help. I've tried connecting my laptop to my television using the S-Video cable. But when I do, all I get is a black screen. What steps should I take in changing the settings etc? Thanks

What brand of laptop is it? (and model too.)

On most laptops you have to enable the S-Video output. On some there's an alt+function key that will do it. On others you need to go into your display settings and tell it to output to the s-Video.

Rememmber; a laptop is designed to conserve every scrap of power it can, so it won't be sending a signal to the S-Video output unless it has to.
