Hello all.

Short story, a friend of mine was too lazy to set up a warranty on his RROD'd console and bought a new one. I offered him £40 and set up the repair. His console was only 2 months shy of losing its 3 y/r warranty. I received the console back today and found a nice letter in the box explaining how they shipped me a brand new replacement console so that I could get gaming over the holidays. RESULT!

Now heres the questions:

1, I'm sure that the console will contain the Liteon DG12D2S, as its a new console. Ive opened the tray and cant see any thing to be sure with my untrained eye. Is this drive flashable yet?

2, My console doesnt have a HDD, yet I have 2 SATAII WD's 80gb Caviar SE drive's kicking about my desk with no home (bought to replace my RAID, yet not used due to their questionable uptime). Can I use one of these as my HDD for the console? If so, help please?

Im quite technically savvy, being a PC and OC enthusiast and build PC's for friends and family so getting dirty isn't a problem. I just need a kick in the right direction to get started as the 360 is a whole new animal to me!

1. remove the faceplate of the xbox ... there is a hole you can look through and see wires ... the color of the wires tells you what drive is installed... this page might help

Thanks for the reply. Bummer on the HDD front :/

Now, I removed the faceplate, and it has yellow wires, so its the LiteOn as I guessed/feared. Has there been any success with this drive?

depends how you define success...

as long as you have the $$$ to spend then sure it can be made to work. no matter what you have to buy another xbox DVD drive... preferably a benq...

then you either pay someone to perform the liteon drive spoofing service or you buy the key extractor and spear and do it yourself...

either way ya go the whole process will cost $100-$125 or so.. although the benq is an expensive replacement drive and could bring the total cost higher..

IN other words, he's screwed! I swear going through the process with the whole Lite-On thing is too expensive and time consuming. I'd recommend scouting GameStop or whatever place sales used 360's. And look for the Core models not the Arcade since 90% of those contains Lite-On's.

well ya i mean it just depends how you look at it ... personally it worked out for me cause i had the $$ to spend on it and someone knowledgeable and capable of doing it ...

but i can understand that for a lot of people taking the time and spending $100+ is really not a great solution...

it would be ideal if there was some way that people could just hook a liteon up to their computer, run a utility program, and wham-o the thing is flashed and ready to be put back into the xbox... but i don't see that happening anytime soon...

Im not screwed. Hell that works out to about £70 ish. Thats not to bad at all.
