i've seen the penny method and the x-clamp one. which is the best way t fix the red rings? help me

to fix my console with the 3 red lights, I just took it apart and disconnected the fan and turned it on till it over heated, 2 lights on i think it was, then turned it off and let it cool for 20 mins, turned it on and it was good to go, and that was months ago...

i am guessing u did the x-clamp fix. did u put the wipe off the old thermal paste and apply the new one?

if you want to fix it permanently then you have to REFLOW the board. It is far better a solution than just the xclamp. When you reflow it you actuslly repair the cause and not just band-aid it.

I do both on the ones I repair.

I second coppers vote.
I always do both, plus cooling mods. I haven't had an xbox i couldn't repair or even one returned to me by a customer. If you do the xclamp replacement right there's no way that heatsink will ever come lose by itself. I don't see how people are screwing this up.
I should mention i use the llammas rrod xclamp replacement. It involves drilling through the metal case. It then spaces the board from the metal case and also keeps the board from warping due to constant pressue from the 8 screws holding the 2 heatsinks in place. This is probably why i've never had a console returned to me.

I like these guys. They are cheap and reliable. Although the shipping costs lately have gone up. So if anyone has any links to cheaper in this kind of bulk I'd like to know also.
I've also found m5 screws and steel washers at Lowes in the Metric hardware bins but no nylon washers. Some people don't even bother with nylon washers and only use steel though.

I don't get it either, if the fix is done right you shouldn't experience any problems with the RROD again.. I also do the reflow along with the X-clamp fix when i repair the RROD...

I use the same washers but a longer bolt. I used to use the llamma kit on every box but that got a bit expensive and i was disappointed when i was a washer short. I might be taking a trip to fastenal to see if i can get these in bulk, but it's really hard to find nylon 1mm washers let alone in bulk.
