My xbox suddenly stoped reading disks. At first it seemed that the spindle motor in the dvd rom was busted. I opened the dvd drive and cleaned the spin motor with a q-tip and alcohol and put it back together. The drive would now spin the disks, but it wouldn't read any games. Except for Halo 3. I than replaced the laser with one from a samsung drive. It would now play originals, but not backups. I than did a pot calibration and lowered the resistance on the dvd to about 2.85k ohms. Now everything seemed to be fine. It would play backups just fine, so I put the console back together. I started up the console and tried to play a backup game. It worked fine, but after about 5-10 minutes, the xbox just frose. I restarted the console but now the open tray problem was back. I tried with different backup and original games, but the only game that would work was Halo 3 original. I was furious and wanted to smash the damn thing into a million pieces, but it was late and I managed to put the xbox away and go to bed.
When I turned on the xbox this morning, the console worked fine again. It started up just fine with a backup game inserted and everything seemed fine for about 5-10 minutes. Than the console frose up again and when I turned it back on, the open tray problem was back and it would only read Halo 3.
So what the hell is the problem? I mean, why will it just play for 5-10 minutes at a time. Could it be a heating problem? Because it seems like the xbox will only play games as long as it's cold. But I don't understand why it would only play Halo 3 after the console's gotten warm

All i can say is that if you can play the halo 3 for more than that 10 mins, say 30 mins or more then it cant be an overheating issue. Asside from that i know nothing about the dvd drives though.

Ok it's not an overheating problem. I searched the web and found a fix called the rubberband fix. I did a rubberband fix and it would play my backups again. But it only lasted a litle time.
I tried tu burn a game at 8X and for some reason the dvd player will sometimes read this disk. This seems weird as I thought that burning the disks at lower speed would make better copies. But anyway, I'm getting a new hitachi drive as the drive is way to unstable as it is.

I think most people burn backups at 2.4x.

Wow the good ol' open tray days. Anyways, I've had that issue, it's the laser gone bad. I also did the rubberband trick and it lasted not even a day before the problems returned for an ultimate drive fatality (it wouldn't read anything). Get another drive or laser, you'll thank yourself in the long run.

Yeah I've already ordered a new drive. The old one is singing it's last verse. It takes 10-15 tries to get it to read a game.

Yeah I've always burned them at 2.4 x. I just read somewhere that if your dvd player is reading originals and not backups, you should try burning the games at 8x. I don't know why, but the game that I burned at 8x is currently the only backup game the console wil read. Still... I have to try for 10-15 times before it reads.

So I got my new drive today. I changed the pcb boards and tried a backup game. Same problem.
It doesn't make any sense. It still will only read backups burned at 8x. This sucks cause I don't want to burn all my games over again. Those dvd disks are expensive. So why will it still not read my backup games? Could it be something wrong with the console itself? Or could it perhapse be something wrong with the modchip? I've got an NME chip in the drive by the way.

I ent sure .. the tray in the 360 is always faulty realy .. new consoles ent as reliable to be honest m8

But I've never had any problems with the drive before. It worked perfectly for 3 years. Then one day the spindle engine just stopped. I fixed it, but now it won't read backups anymore. Not even with this new drive.

i dont know about that specific mod chip but being that you changed the whole drive except the pcb then i would judge that its the mod chip, i would remove and reseat it and see if it changes anything. I've had alot of problems with mod chips brought to me that would not read backups that would work sometimes, i would remove and reseat the solder and it would work fine.

The CS Supervisor specifically informed me that if there are not enough customer complain about this issue (OPEN TRAY FAILURE), they wouldn't even think of flagging this issue to MS head quarters.

Here's the theory behind Faulty DVD drive after NXE update..
The NXE update was able to expose the weakness of our DVD drives. These are the only things we could do:
1. Wait for a patch to fix the DVD Drives
2. Pay MS to get your DVD Drive replace for $100
If we don't want to pay MS to replace our DVD Drives all we could do is start complaining to the customer support.. the more complains the better
Remember it was the NXE update that exposed our weak DVD drives, that only means that only a software patch would be able to cover our weak DVD drives.

Well I've sort of fixed my problem. I've flashed my new drive with Ixtreme 1.4 and it reads everything now. This of course means that I can't connect to live withouth changing the dvd drive to the original one, but at least I can play backup games again.
