my friend has a wii with 3.4 fw on it. i installed the tw hack and now have the homebrew channel on the wii. My goal is to help him play backups of his games without a mod chip. If that is possible can you please help me out. Most things on the net ramble and dont get in detail. thank you

Since you have the Homebrew Channel already installed you can go HERE and follow the Wii Fix Guide part of this guide (you should only have to do the steps under this section. It shouldn't be necessary to do the downgrade part of the guide).

After you follow that section you should be able to install wad/cIOS files to the Wii.

Once you have done the steps above format the SD CARD and then download this file HERE. Extract the file and copy the folders inside the boot loader gamma folder to the root of the SD CARD (copy the folders inside the boot loader gamma folder not the boot loader gamma folder itself).

Now run the homebrew channel and select the cIOS installer in the homebrew channel menu. Follow the on screen instruction to install the cIOS.

After it has installed use the WiiGator gamma boot loader to boot the game backups.

Plus you will need IOS16-64-v257-prod.wad which you can google to find. Place it in the WAD folder.

This seeems to be packed with wii-tools.zip but this file isn't there? or it's called something else.
