My Modded 360 Won't Read Backed-Up Games.....

Ok i have a modded 360 (Firmware iXtreme 1.4) that has been giving me problems.Its from 2006 and has a Samsung MS28 DVD Rom. I keep getting the "unable to read disc" error.I modded it early this year and all was well....until about 2 weeks ago. I noticed that when i would play a backed up game it would take longer than it use to for the game to start. That didn't bother me but that was a red flag for what was about to happen. The drive suddenly stopped reading 5 days ago while playing Left 4 Dead. Then it came back and then went out again. So i went to ebay and purchased a new drive. I got it today and flashed it and guess what......its doing the same thing. It stops reading at the same point where it stopped on left 4 dead with the new drive. The disc is not scratched and plays fine on my friend's 360. The odd thing tho is that i put back my original 360's drive and flashed it back to the original (non-modded) firmware and Original 360 games work fine. I then re-modded it with iXtreme to see if it will play modded games but it is hit and miss. Dead Rising came on once out of 15 tries. So thats 2 drives doing the samething.
Also i get the E71 (Dashboard Messed Up) error and everynow and then the E79 (Hard Drive prolem) error even tho i dont have a Hard Drive.
Quick Summery:
Modded 360 a few months back
Last week wouldnt read disc
Got new Drive and flashed it
Still doing the same thing
Put old drive back with original firmware
Original 360 games
Modded again with iXtreme
Original 360 games work but backed up is hit or miss
Anyone have a clue as to whats going on?

what brand of media is it ... you should be using verbatims
have you tried installing the game to the harddrive

I'm using Verbatim disc. They have worked for the last 6 or so months. I've tried them on my friends Xbox 360 and they all work fine.
I haven't tried installing on a hard drive because well.....i don't have a hard drive. Thats the odd thing about getting error code E79.

well i tell ya the whole install to harddrive feature is really an invaluable thing... cause it removes all the little glitches and issues that come along with the DVD drive and reading the disk.
ya you still need the DVD for the security check but it eliminates 99% of the problems that come from reading the burned DVD's ...
i'd suggest you look into getting a HD for your xbox ... if you could get the plastic HD enclosure from somewhere you could buy a 120gb hd off ebay for $50 to install into it...

Does that really work? I mean could you just get the case and then install a hard drive into it? That could be a option so that i don't have to replace the Xbox 360.

well what i was trying to say is how you can save money on getting a 120gb harddrive... rather than paying $130-$140 buying it retail...
you need the plastic enclosure that xbox 360 hd's normally come in ... so perhaps getting a broken harddrive from someone or perhaps a pawn shop something like that.
then you remove the broken HD from the plastic enclosure and install a 120gb disk off ebay... its just a cheaper way to get a big xbox 360 HD

it's definitely a bigger process than just taking out the old hard drive and putting in the new one. It has to be partitioned correctly, and the correct security files inserted, but it can be done.

nah really its quite simple ... you don't have to do any partitioning and the utility to write the security sector is very simple. it doesn't even require a special SATA card or anything...
i just did it last week and really the hardest part is getting that plastic HD enclosure open and put back together properly...

well to sum it up for you, could be bad luck, bad flash. i would try re-flashing, also try changing around the read speeds. if that dosnt work, try getting a hard drive as metioned. or you could obviously buy a new drive.

have you tried re-burning any of the backup's, or having someone else burn you a backup? I have a friend who when he burns backups from his laptop will usually not play on his hitachi, but play fine on my benq. But all of the ones i burn play percetly on both of our systems. Also i've heard of disc's deteriorating over time, so for those that are 6 months maybe this is happening, however i'm not positive on the specifics about this maybe someone else knows a little more.

Microsoft actually has a deal right now where you can buy a 20g Hard Drive for about $30. Do a search on xbox.com for "support upgrade" or "hard drive upgrade". I had mine in 2 days - all the way from Texas to Canada.

The disc should be fine. All the disc aren't 6 months old. I was just using the 6 month statement to explain that all my backups have been running fine for the last 6 months.
I will try however the changing of the read speeds. I myself have thought that somehow the firmware became distorted so i will give the changing of the firmware a try.

Ok i re-flashed my Firmware from 12x to 8x and tried it and it still was coming up the unable to read disc while trying to play a backed up disc. I put in one of my Original games and let it run......for about 2 hours and then stuck in a backed-up game (Left 4 Dead) and it came right on. I tried a few more and they all worked. I haven't let the system cool back down yet because i have been playing it but is there in any way a chance that letting the system get hot made it play the games? I know that sounds crazy but it didn't work when i first tried a backup but after letting it play for 2 hours on an original the backups now work.

Ok now its having problems again. I put the frame back into the 360's case and turned it on and it came up unreadable disc. I put back in an original and it works fine so i then put back in a backup (Left 4 Dead) and after 2 or 3 tries it came on and worked fine. I then put in Madden 09 (Backed-Up) and it came on fine but after like 20 minutes it froze and then i had to restart the system. Again its a hit and a miss. Anything Anyone?
