I fixed a RROD and then flashed the Hitachi 59DJ dvd drive that was in it. Ixtreme 1.4 12x like I normally do and haven't had any problems with except for another Hitachi that had the dirty disk error.

So originals play without problem but backups that work on all my other systems will not boot up at all. Click. Spin up for 4 seconds. Wind down. Click. and repeat about 4 times before the open tray message comes up.

Backups are burned with Imgburn on Verbs made in Singapore at 2.4x. I read and tried burning a game at 4x but with the same results. I read that 8x could work but haven't had the opportunity to try that yet.

I've also googled a couple of fixes.
Rubberband - failed still open tray.
1mm plastic square to press the sensor sooner - failed still open tray.
2mm plastic square - failed and didn't let originals play still open tray.
Rubberband and 1mm plastic square together - failed still open tray.

At this point I can only think of a few things.
1) Try burning a backup at 8x
2) Reflash the drive.
3) Reflash the drive at a slower speed like 8x.

I read a little about this pot tweak thing but I haven't had an occasion to try it or even know that it would be something to try in this situation.

What I'm hoping for is some other ideas or suggestions to help me attack this thing when I get home from work. I've found threads from 2006 and 2007 but they seem unresolved. The only thread that showed some promise was the plastic tab from x-s but that didn't work for this drive.

Thanks

Myself, I'd switch to 8x first. 12x works fine if you have a perfect burn, the media is good quality, and the pot setting is on spot. But if any of those 3 conditions are off, then 12x fails.

At 12x, that laser is trying to read at 100% proformance. Slower read speeds let the laser work a little more efficently.

I use 8x with all the consoles I flash.

Sounds good.
I'll try that and post the results.
Thanks again.

Well I restored the original firmware and then re-flashed it with the 8x firmware.
Still open tray error.
Then I gave the 1mm plastic square mod another go with the slower firmware.
Still open tray error.

Since it belongs to someone else I am going to let this one go. The RROD is fixed and it plays retail games for now.

Thanks again guys for your help.

It's your board on the drive. Had the exact same problem with a Hitachi 46, swapped out lasers, still "open tray". Switched the board to one from a busted 78, games boot fine. Just had to spoof the 78 to report as a 46.
