I have a hitachi 46dh and it has the "unplayable disc" error and it also errors out to the white screen of please insert a xbox 360 game. I have cleaned the laser, cleaned the motor, pot tweaked it to only being able to get a retail game to play maybe 1 out of every 20 times of opening and closing the drive.
Also the xbox when i opened up the console was COMPLETELY filled with dust. It honestly looked like someone used the thing as a vacuum cleaner.
Which i'm hoping is what nuked the drive into not working anymore.
My question is am i able to put a 78 in there or even a different model like a benq or anything that isn't prone to such failures? Drop some knowledge on me here guys.
thanks man. Would you have a recommended drive to get? this is for someone elses xbox that is getting the fw changed after i switch it all over. so simplisity between the change of drives and changing fw would be ideal. thanks
They're all really a horse-a-piece. The newer version drives are a bit quieter. The Hitachi 46-59 drives use the same method for flashing. The 78 is a little different in the beginning, then uses the same method as the others.
The Benq drive is different than the Hitachi's for flashing.
Your best bet is to look through the guides for flashing a drive to make sure you can handle the flashing methods for the drives you'd like to use. Once you decide on which you may feel comfortable with, then look in to spoofing that drive.
just snooping around i've seen guys just replace the board. take it out of the old and put it in the new. is this doable or would you warn against doing that?

I swapped the board from a Hitachi w/ firmware 46, to a brand new drive that had firmware 47. with no problems, works like a dream now.
I was going to spoof the the 47 with the keys from my 46, but the program I was using kept freezing. I was using FW toolbox3.0, the guide I was reading used 4.5, I couldn't connect to x bins to get 4.5 from my work computer so I gave up tring to flash, and just switched boards.
