As my xbox360 aint going live, can i take it to a freinds house and switch drives with his box to check if it will work from his ip addy.

The key and the motherboard are married for the lack of a better term. The DVD drive has a key code that allows it to work with the 360's motherboard. So unless the drives are the same make and model (example: Both Samsung MS28) then no it will not work. However if they are the same make and model then you will have to change the key code in the drive you replaced for it to work with the 360. The only way I know how to do this is to read the firmware with Iprep and change the code and then reflash using the replaced key code.

There might be one other way it's called spoofing but I have no knowledge of it but am looking to learn.
