Hey all. Got a 360 Premium with a flashed Hitachi GDR-3120L that has worked fine for a year or so. Now produces the "Unplayable Disc" message in the tray area of the GUI when attempting to play games or movie DVDs. It does, however, read music CDs fine. Took it apart and verified that the magnet is not sticking to the lid. I didn't remove the spindle assembly since I figured if it's playing CDs, it's not seized. Also cleaned the laser with a microcloth and a bit of solvent. Nothing has changed, so I'm figuring my next step is tweaking the laser pot. It also occurred to me that maybe I should try adjusting the screws that hold the spindle assembly on, because I remembered that sometimes when it's been removed (such as to unseize a spindle) that sometimes it will only play CDs until you've got the proper amount of torque on those two little torx screws that hold the assembly on. But since I've never removed the spindle assembly, I don't know how they would be out of adjustment in the first place.
Anyway, I'm mainly posting this in case the fact it plays CDs but not other media is indicative of a specific issue and fix. Is there any other fixes, short of replacing the drive, I should be looking into?
As far as I know, lasers will work with any 360 drive. Don't hold me to that though. And changing a laser is simple and cheap. If you don't want to spend money, try the pot tweak on the DVD side and not the CD. Be careful not to burn out your laser.
if you go with the replacement laser, make sure you carefully take out the screws that hold the laser in, and make sure to COUNT HOW MANY TURNS IT TAKES UNTIL THE SCREW IS ALL THE WAY OUT. otherwise, you will have a hell of a time getting it aligned like it was originally.
must be nice then, the one i did was on my old sammy ms25 that had like 2 screws holding it in and was a pain in the royal arse to get back how it was.
