I have no clue how these things work so bear with me if this is overly paranoid. Is there any possibility that a backup may contain modified files that when installed on your hard drive could be remotely read by a company who looks down upon such activity?

I personally haven't thought much about that. I mean ya that could be something to speculate, but I've installed games on the HDD, and haven't had problems on live.

it's possible, like built in spyware, but highly unlikely. It would rely on the company assuming that the customer will install the game to their hard drive, and not all people do. And the people that do, they probably don't care what's on their hard drive (or at least 95% of them).
