Question about playing 720p files on 1080p Hdtv

This question might sound daft, when playing a 720p file with a resolution of 1280x688 via the Ps3 on a 40" 1080p HDTV would it upscale the resolution to make it look bigger or would it just play the file with bigger black bars instead as I we are considering getting a new TV and I am not so sure about this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Either your PS3 or the TV itself should upscale the picture. If your TV can handle 720p (which I'm assuming it can... if it can't, then that's a shame...), then it should either display it natively or upscale it.

Same with the PS3; it should detect your TV's settings and output appropriately.

...hopefully that's what happens. If you get something weird like half the picture turning into a giant beetle that storms around your house, then let us know. We'll either call in an exterminator, or I'll personally come over with a big samurai sword and do mortal combat with it.

Just sayin'.

Doesnt matter what quality file it is you can always adjust it to make it full screen. Playing it at native resolution on the other hand will be a lot smaller depending on the quality of the file.
(triangle button brings up the mini menu...im sure you know of this)
but anything above 720p will look good full screen so you have nothing to worry about.
