Hi
Im going to buy a new nintendo wii for xmas, but just wondering if it is worth buying a prechipped one or is there another way of using backups on them like the 360?

Im not very technical and if it means taking it apart I wouldnt do it myself but was just wondering, ive seen people mention softmod and versions but I have no clue what version a new wii would be and what a softmode would do, sorry but we all have to start somewhere! Thanks.

Right now, you can do almost anything without a chip that you can with a chip. If you get a new wii, you can use the 3.4 firmware twilight hack to load homebrew.

Then using the backup loader and a handful of other homebrew programs, you'll have all the functionality of a chip EXCEPT that the backup loader software is still in alpha. You won't get nearly as much backup loading possibility without a modchip.

If you go for the softmod way, make sure you install the rescue menu from Starfall in case of a brick.

I got the solderless Wiikey2, it's practically kids stuff to install it, just snaps in place. That would seem to be a better alternative.

Do u need special tools to do it? I suppse it wouldnt be hard to get a tut for it too. Interesting stuff. Was on the verge of paying £250 for a prechipped one then too...

No special tools needed besides a precision phillips.

yes you do!
get a triwing screwdriver to open it, I tried using a flat head and stripped a screw. I had to use a drill to get it out.

i bought 3 wiikey v2 solderless chips for mine and friends wii`s from this uk website - http://wii-repairs.com/osc/

very fast free delivery and all 3 are working as they should , it was easy enough to install using ozmodchips guide -

you will need a triwing screwdriver to open up youe wii.

OK rocket scientists - a "triwing" is nothing more than a precision phillips. I know because I used mine to install my WiiKey. You can go to any store that sells screwdrivers and buy a precision kit for a buck. Don't get fooled into thinking that it's a special tool.

sorry to correct you mate but a triwing is a security screwdriver that has 3 carved edges !

a phillips screwdriver has actually 4 carved edges .

pics to show you - http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.2905

i seriously doubt you opened your wii with just a phillips screwdriver as you would have just rounded the heads off the triwing screws mate .

ps. the triwing is very cheap and so dont worry about it .
