whats better for dvd backups, dvd+r or dvd-r? Also what is a good program for ripping them? I tried dvd x copy but it never can find the disk in my drive

DVD+R is more advanced than DVD-R but will cost u more.
to rip decode and burn just download DVD Shrink from this site its sooo easy to use.
If you want to make it automatically burn for you,you need to also download Nero and install it (but u dont have to accually open it)

DVDshrink and Nero are the way to go for software.
DVD-R's are more compatible with stand-alone drives. Personally, I think they're better.

Which is better depends on the hardware you're going to be playing the copies on - standalone, PS2 or XBox for example.
If you have a dual-formay burner I suggest buying a small quantity of each format and see which is most compatible with your hardware. Some standalones can be picky as to which format they like to play.

the very best media i have found are philips dvd+r
they work on all stanalones that can play backups
(but they do cost a bit)

What ever your choice, the most important thing is the disc's quality -
I suggest either Ritek GO4 or Verbatim.
As has already been stated, choose the most compatible - either the plus ,(+) or minus (-)

Thats quite a debate that one - though i do tend to agree with you myself. The DVD Forum wouldnt however.
