Hello all. This is my first post here. I've tried searching here (and the internet) for a definitive solution but can't quite piece everything together.

I have a Japanese Wii that I received off of a trade on CL. I got a mod chip installed on it to play US games, however all of the system menu's are still in Japanese until I load a US region game, which of course plays in English.

Even though it plays US games now without a problem, I still have to use a backup copy to play the game, since I need to remove the update patch, which gets somewhat annoying. For example, I bought the Wii Fit, but I had to go out and download a copy of the Wii Fit game, just so that I can pull out the update with WiiBrickBlocker.

So I have read up a bit on a application called AnyRegionChanger which people have reported good success going from a J region / system menu to making it a full fledged US console, with english menu and American store. However to install this the only way that I can see it being installed is through the homebrew channel. I downloaded the .iso file for the Japanese console last night but got a long error (in Japanese, so I couldn't read it). I checked my firmware version and it is 3.3J.

I had the mod chip installed professionally and it plays US games without a problem. Could someone please help me out with the steps essentially to get AnyRegionChanger working so I can switch my console from 3.3J to perhaps 3.4U? I've read that even though my console is chipped, I still need to use the twilight hack (how people softmod their Wii's) to get the homebrew channel installed. If that is the case, can I use my legal backup of Zelda (I bought the real version, but like with the Wii Fit, needed to download it to remove the update on my JP console) or do I need to have a JP version of the game for it to work? Or do I not need to do that at all?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the wordy post, I've tried doing as much research as possible I just need to piece the puzzle together, plus it is compounded by the fact that I can't read the system menus, which add additional headaches, so as you can tell I'd really like make it a "US" console.

Regards in advance,

So after doing some further research, it seems that I have to do the Twilight hack to get the homebrew channel to load. My one question is can I use the US version of Twilight Princess to load the channel even though it is a Japanese console?

You should use the Japan TP hack when installing the Homebrew Channel. After you region change the system to USA then you can use the USA version of TP hack. But there is really no need to use TP hack again if you have the homebrew channel installed.

Problem is a backup of the Japanese version is no where to be found. I've searched newsgroups and the typical sea plunderer, both came up empty.

Will the US version not work at all?

To be honest I don't know if it would work or not. Never heard of anyone trying it.

Just wanted to post a update. I was able to use the USA version of TP to install the homebrew channel. I was then able to follow the process to downgrade from 3.3J to 3.2J.

I then used Anyregion Changer to switch it from 3.2J to 3.2U. All my system menus is now USA! I can play my retail games from the US without a problem. It updated to 3.4U without a problem.

There are only 2 problems that I have now. Both somewhat minor in comparison to what I got in return, but would be awesome to fix.

1) I cannot access the store. Anyregion Changer switched the store to the USA store. I accept the prompt to change the store origin, state that I don't want to link a Nintendo account, then I receive a error message.

2) The news channel receives the RSS feed if I select the news channel. That shows current news, however when I click start it says that it cannot update information.

Neither are major issues by any means given what I got in return. No more Japanese main screen, settings, and ability to play retail US games without worrying about Bricking the Wii.

Sorry to jump in at a thread that's finished... but:

a) I have a Japanese Wii with (firmware?) 2.2j
b) WiiKey installed, no idea of the version, but it came with a "WiiKey 1.2 setup disk"
c) I've downloaded the WiiKey 1.9s update and config images

So, if I want to convert my Japanese console to a US one, as you have done here:

a) Should I first update from 2.2j to 3.2j? (how?)
b) Should I _then_ update the WiiKey to 1.9s, or should I do that first? (And do I directly use the 1.9s update, or apply the ones before that, and then apply 1.9s?)
c) Before any of these updates, should I try to enable the homebrew channel (will it work with 2.2j firmware?) Also, since the whole set is in Japanese, (which I don't know how to read / understand) do I have to be aware of any special messages?

N00B ALERT!

Best Regards & Cheers,
prshah

a) Homebrew channel and the region changer do require a minimum firmware level to run properly, and while I dont know exactly that that is you should probably update to 3.2 to be safe. Running an unedited J copy of mario kart will take care of that.

b) You could update the wiikey before or after. Doesn't really matter as the modchip firmware is completely independent of the wii's firmware. And you dont need to do the updates sequentually, even if you're on an old wiikey firmware you can just update it straight to 1.9s. Of course if you're on 1.9b or earlier and want to run mario kart to update the wii to 3.2j you'll have to update the wiikey to be able to run the game.

c) As I said before, homebrew channel does require a minimum firmware level to run so you'll probably want to run the update first. And the only potential message you might see is the one about the game having to have run and been saved on the wii once before you can delete the save file and copy the twilight hack over. Once you boot the twilight hack its running from homebrew channel installer and not the wii's firmware so it will be in english And the homebrew channel and region changer are in english as well so that shouldnt be a problem either.

Thanks, that's very clear. I'll attempt it over the (next) weekend.

I don't have Mario Kart; can I update it over the Internet (WiFi available and setup, WiiConnect24 turned off) or will that push me straight to whatever the latest version is, instead of 3.2j? (I understand there are some issues with 3.3+, which leads to many people opting for a downgrade).

Further, I know that the WiiKey has a "recovery" capability in case of a failed flash; does the Wii itself have something similar? Or should I bring over a UPS (for power backup) from the office till I finish the upgrade?

Your (and anyone elses') replies and insights are much appreciated.

Stumped at the first step.

I got the 1.9s firmware and config images from the wiikey.cn website.

I extracted the rar's and burnt the ISOs as DVD images on good quality media at 2x and then 1x. However, the console does not recognize the DVDs (I get a "clicking" sound and then the "failed" message).

Possibly because the images are not filechopped.

From the Wii Firmware Updates, Wii and WiiKey Resources thread, I tried to get the filechopped images, but the link is broken...

EDIT: Finally got filechopped, successfully increased the size of the ISO to 1.4Gb...

...but when I put the DVD(-r) into the console, and click on the gamecube logo that appears when the disk is read and loaded, the Wii resets itself, without anything else appearing on the screen.

Any suggestions?

Hi evomac, I've also got a Japanese 3.3 unit with a wiikey and I'm in the same situation you were in. I'm getting ready to install homebrew/anyregion changer and just want to get the steps right, especially with regards to downgrading

Is this what you did?
1) Using the Twilight hack, install the homebrew channel
2) Load AnyRegion Changer from homebrew, and use it to downgrade to 3.2J (assuming it needs wifi for this?)
3) Use AnyRegion Changer to change game/area/system to US/english 3.2E

I've been reading conflicting reports on how to deal with the modchip. I have the wiikey japanese firmware 1.9 set to ignore regions. I've read that this makes the system think every game is from Japan, which would be an issue once I set my game region to US. To get around this, do I first (before running AnyRegion Changer) have to download and flash the US 1.9 firmware and turn on region override from there?

My primary intention is to play legit US games because I can't read Japanese, and maybe the occasional backup :). I am currently not interested in homebrew besides the initial use of AnyRegion Changer.. do I need to be worried about any potential updates that are on newer Wii games? Are you loading your games using a special launcher (e.g starfall) to prevent updates?

Thanks!!

yippy8888, I know it's been a while, but in case you're still at a loss, I believe Mario Baseball or whatever it's called (mario Slugger?) the Japanese version (I believe) is 3.3j
