Xbox 360 failing at just the wrong time.

Hi guys,
I thought I'd share my story with you, see if any of you have had similar experiences. I have an Xbox 360 for a good while now, and haven't ever had an issue with it up until a few days ago. I had just gotten it back from my brother, who had a loan of it for a while, so I popped in GTA IV since I haven't played it in a while so I felt like blowing something up ;-)
Anyway, I played for maybe 90 minutes, not a problem, no glitch, no freeze, nothing. So I turn off Xbox 360 and go out for a while. Later on that night I come home, decide to catch a little while of play. Got maybe 5 mins in before it locked up the console. Rebooted, about 5 mins in again it froze. I write for AfterDawn so I know what this means, so I decided to turn it on and let it sit on dashboard to see what happens.
Left it on for hours while I did other things, and it was fine. Since then I have watched hours and hours of video through wifi network and from USB key, not a problem. But anytime I try a game I get freeze (no GFX glitches of any kind, just dead freeze all of a sudden). What's funny is I watched video from network for hours last night, going through a series, and it was fine, today I popped in a Family Guy DVD and it didn't even get through 1 episode before freezing.
I had thought maybe my drive was actually the problem but my false sense of security from RROD was shaken when I rebooted it and it froze on boot ;-) So I haven't gotten RROD yet, but I know it's coming. If it was 2 weeks ago, I'd wrap the thing up in cloth and let it burn for a while until I did get RROD.... but unfortunately... I bought my console on Dec 2nd, 2005... which puts it out of warranty.
So any ideas on what I should do? Should I open it and remove heatsinks, remove the old thermal compound or pad and put on some fresh new artic silver or something? From my knowledge of RROD this won't really help very much when the damage has been done though so I don't know if I'll bother. I know RROD is coming but I don't think any of the fix kits are really going to do me any good either, nothing more than a temporary fix.
I know it's dying, so f**k it, might aswell experiment on it a bit. Thoughts?

Sounds like it's time for the penny fix and probably an xclamp replacement. You can google either of these fixes or i'm sure they're in the rrod sticky.
The xbox freezing is from the ram seperating from the board. So if i were you i'd try the penny fix first (probably 3 pennies on each chip) and see how that works.
If it doesn't fix the freezing issues i'd try the xclamp replacement and some cooling mods.
There's a thread here that has the same issue as your xbox, and then i added cooling information.
Let me know how it works out, it's probably a simple fix.

I would agree, do the x-clamp fix.
It can be just as good as a preventative as a rrod potential "fix". While it's not gauranteed to work, it does most of the time.
Since you're already out of warranty, that would definitely be your best bet. I would hop on it now before it red rings.

I have the console plugged out and left sitting there, but there is one thing I must bring up. A few months ago I did actually have one issue with the Xbox 360 that was weird. It was on and I pressed the Eject button on the console, and I remember the whole thing went dead... now I mean dead, no freeze at all, just died. It wouldn't switch back on until I plugged out the power supply, disconnected from the console and then plugged it all back in and then it was fine.
But the point I'm trying to make is could I have an issue with the DVD-ROM drive. I am also aware that certain disc reading problems are associated with a bad power supply, mine is three years old but it never gave me a problem and it doesn't seem get very hot or anything. I say this because when trying to play a game it freezes, yet it can sit on the dashboard or play XviD video from network or USB, yet when I tried t play a DVD today, it was probably 10 minutes before the console locked up.
I know what I could try, download a demo from Xbox Live to the hard drive and see if I can play it without freezing, but it's important to remember that when I DVD froze today, right after I reset the console.... literally right after, it froze on the Xbox 360 logo, and it hasn't been on since. So just wanted to see if you guys know of any other possible problem it could be before I order anything online?

have you had it serviced before? if so, the return date of serviced console would be the 'purchase date' so your 3yrs of RROD would be extended to a different date, so say in July 07 u sent it in for repairs, they send you a refurb then your generic 1 year warranty would run until July 08 and your RROD warranty would run until July 2010.
you will get RROD (the freezing Xbox logo happened to me before 1 of my RROD consoles)

Yep I know I will get RROD. To answer your question no, it has never been serviced, it ran very well up until a few days ago, and in fairness i doesn't really owe me anything, I ran up few thousand hours of use easily whether its with gaming or just video... I watch a LOT of video, and also used it as my DVD player since it loads DVD menus etc. much faster.
Lucky for me I just got assurances that I can have an Xbox 360 console, 1 year old, with a bad DVD drive for free from a friend, who for some reason has another one already. He said the DVD drive is functioning fine, it will eject, it will boot games etc. but it cannot load properly, makes excessive noise etc. So if I'm lucky I'll be able to simply replace the drive in it with a spoofed drive and presto, 1 year old Xbox 360.... before you ask, I have no idea why he didn't use his warranty, but I'm not an asshole, I did suggest it ;-) I think he got it sometime in mid-2007 though so since it's not RROD, he probably has no warranty to fall back on anyway.
So I'll give that a shot and I might just end up being very happy. I also might be able to get the Lian Li XB01 case for either free or very cheap. I know they are bulky as hell, but I still hear good things about what they do for airflow etc.

Give M$ a call and tell them your problem i think they will still fix your console under the red ring warrenty.that is once your console red ring and it will.right befor my console red ringed it froze a lot.
