I had a modded wii but for whatever reason the drive no longer works. I am about to go onto ebay to by a replacement drive. Right now the wii is working in the sense that even without the drive the wii starts up and I can see the channels but the drive no longer spins.

Has anyone ever swapped out a wii drive before? Is it straight forward as in take out the screws and cables and put in the new drive? I know how to take it apart and all that but my main concern is if you had any firmware type issues. Right now I am on 3.4 but I assume the replacement drive I get will not be at the right firmware level. Just want to make sure I don't run into any more costly problems. Thanks.

Just remove the old drive and connect the new drive. It is that easy.
The firmware issues your worry about doesn't exist.

Replacement wii drives are compatible across all chipsets, regions and firmwares. Just pop the drive out and put the new one in.

Sorry to drag this back up just checking the info given, there appear to be different types of drive offered for sale Why?
as my wii is chipped with a d2cpro ( i think thats what it was called, the one just before the argon) i assume the chip is not connected to any part of the drive. I still have warranty from the company i bought it from modded but id have to send it back to germany and it may take weeks!
If it realy is an open case swap drive close case job it may be less hassle to do it myself

You assume incorrectly. The modchip is connected to the drive and nothing else.

The reason you see different drives for sale is because different modchips are compatible with different chipset drives. The wii will accept any drive but you'd have to remove the chip from your current one and put it on the new one if you still want a modded wii.

You can buy a premodded drive, which comes with a modchip already attached to it. But if you still have a warranty on your mod I would send it out to them.
