OK - Blasted it for a minute or so. Seems to be working again although I saw nothing come out of it. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised given the amount of stuff that I see behind the cushions on the couch and that's typically where the remote can be found.
Fingers crossed thats all that was wrong - I'll go ahead and update my buddies box now. Amazing how you can start looking for complicated problems when you go off on one train of thought. If it happens again I'll post in this thread so as to keep the info together.
Great forum BTW, every other issue I have had I have found answers by searching so this time I thought I would share in an effort to give back in case it turned out to be something bigger.

Yep, it's always the simple things that prove to be puzzling lol, thought it was behaving as being stuck in FAV mode, anyway all's well that ends well, thanks for jumping in with a dig out HiTeck, will talk soon, and take care mate. ;)
