i have an NTSC-J wii with wiikey and i was wondering if a retail NTSC-U would work on my wii?

yes, if u have the wiikey with region free on
do not install any update packages it asks for, it will brick you wii

but i heard that you had to update the wii so the guitars/drums/mic would work?

You just need the drivers for those things, not the full update.
You can rip those driver WADs directly from the game disc using trucha signer if you haven't brickblocked it yet.

Google for the right wads you'll need.

ALWAYS brickblock out of region games.
