So i have had my Xbox softmodded with XBMC and a 160gb hdd for about a year. The other day i went to update the XBMC build and the transfer failed part way through because the power in my house went out. So when the power came back i tried to turn on my Xbox and it just comes up with a screen that says service needed. So basically i am wondering if i can take out the hard drive and put it in a external enclosure and fix the files then put it back in my Xbox?
Would that work?

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps out.

that trick will not work.

you will basically need the eeprom key to unlock the harddrive (so that your computer recognizes it and transfer data to it ==>), repair your dashboard and lock it again (use the hdm tutorial) (you need to lock it or else your xbox cannot use it. unlocked hd will give you an error 5!).

if you didn't back up the eeprom key, then you will have to hotswap. for that you do not need the eeprom key. you can use either xplore360 just search the forum for the hotswap tutorial, or the hdm tutorial.

if you have a chip build in (or a tsopflash), just put in a slayer or aid disc and let your xbox boot that. then you can repair your dash real easily.

Oh okay.
Thank you
Also, one other thing, just wondering if i would do the "restore c- partition" option or not.
Because i am pretty sure that it is my f partition that is messed up.

no, all dash files are stored on the c drive. you have to rebuild the c drive again, regardless whether you have xbmc as an app and 'linked' it to you c drive dashfiles. you have to repair your dashboard on c drive, and then you can set xbmc as an app to boot as default.

or only restore all the files in the xbmc folder (e apps) and then you might also be done. you have to use a file explorer (explore360) or the one on the hdm cd

good luck

Oh okay. Well i decided to try the hotswap idea because it seems easiest to what went wrong.
But i was reading the tutorial and it emphasized that i need to unplug the data cable. Is that just the IDE or is that something else?

Awe. I got so excited but when i put in the disk it just got to the screen where it is the big X and says xbox underneath it. Then the microsoft logo appeared and it just stopped there and won't load the game.
Any other game that i have tried works though. argh.

Oh. So i just tried to run a few other games and I tried a couple backed up games that were burnt onto discs, then i tried the original disc of the same game and it would not go past the screen that I previously described...
Anyone know whats up with that?
By the way, the error screen is error #21.

look at c4rn1's post at:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/693082

and for a lot of links:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/332766

btw. to hotswap you have to pull the ide cable of your dvd drive before booting. just take out the dvd drive, and you xbox will boot with an error code. from then on your hard drive is unlocked. keep you hard drive connected though!!! (i never got hotswapping to work, but everyone else did....)

if you were able to boot an original game (post 2006 game),then you can use the live option to update your dashboard (no internet connection needed, it will upgrade your dashboard from the dvd. this will end you up with a clean original ms dashboard that works. from then on you can softmod again. if you have your eeprom key, use the hdm tutorial. if you can boot a game to softmod, you can backup your eeprom to your computer (via ftp). then you can use the hdm tutorial from there on.
