New 80 gig BC for ps1 games

pretty dumb question. all i can find on the net is about ps2 bc and nothing about ps1. I have a new 80gig ps3. I know ps2 bc is not possible but can it play ps1 games?

also there is an update in the add on portion os the psn store. It is called a ps2 data download. Some people say if you install that on the new ps3 80 gig you can play ps2 games. Is that correct? or bs

If your 80 gb has no media card slots or only 2 usb ports then it will only play PS1 BC titles. The PS2 data file is for use with only PS2 BC models to help with the PS2 HDD emulation or something to that effect.

That PS2 Data download thing is meant to partition a part of your HDD for PS2 games that require the PS2 HDD - in other words, FFXI.

That said, all models of the PS3 can play PS1 games because all of them do so through software emulation. It's pretty simple nowadays, even on regular-end PCs.

...which is why I find it increasingly odd that Sony doesn't just include the PS2 software emulation with it... or as an updated firmware.

But yeah, all models play PS1 games.
