2. What do you do what software do you use to do backups ?

maintenance would be the same as a non new built PC. Anti-virus program, firewall, disc defragging etc...

As for software, it really depends on what you want to do. If you just want general use, then all you need is an Operating System and some type of office suite. Open Office works great and is free.

As for cleaning, not really much to do. When building a new PC, the OS is installed clean already. All you can really do is some tweaking really to customize it. For example, I use XP 64 and I changed my layout to Windows 2000 style with classic menus and no eye candy. I also got rid of the Welcome screen and use the more secure login screen. I disabled services like Remote Assistant, Windows Update, Remote Registry, etc... as they are all security issues or a nuisance.

I also ran lots of tests like Prime95 to test for stability, some benchmarks like Passmark 6.1 to make sure performance was up to par, etc... There is a lot that you can do and really too much to list. None of it is necessary and just user preference.

For backing up, if you are doing a clean install of an operating system all you need is to make a backup disc of your drivers. This would be 200MB max. What I do sometimes, is I make a custom Windows Install CD and include a Drives folder in there. I use nLite to do that. For instance, I got sick of getting SP2 and all the stupid security updates with XP, so I made a windows CD where all updates were preinstalled and I didn't have to worry about running windows update. I think it's called slipstreaming.

If you must have something to back up your PC, maybe something like Norton Ghost? I've never used a backup utility. My most important files usually go on DVDR. I guess that can replace a backup utility :P If that is the case, I use ImgBurn and good quality Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim DVDR.
