Hello all,

It's been a long time since I've been on here. I've always been in the Mac and DVD side.
Now I'm thinking about a PS3, but just had a major question.

I'm seeing the difference in pricing is really just the hard drive sizes. I've been looking up on google as to why, but found no answer. I understand people want to store a bunch of stuff on them. Why?

Without getting too into it... can you technically store games on it? I have been reading about storing movies, and music and photos. I guess to have something that does it all.
I'm sorry if I'm rambling but I just don't see it. I'm not trying to poke fun, or ridicule, or trying to belittle anybody. Seriously.

I'm just wondering as to what is the reasoning behind it. Please enlighten me.

Thank you for taking the time to read...

The only difference between the newer models is the HDD size.
In some of the older models, different models came with different capabilities (eg the 20/60/80gb models had PS2 backwards-compatibility, the 20gb didnt have wireless etc).

In the newer models however, the only difference is the size of the HDD.

Many people store music/films on their PS3's, as they may have better sound systems, or may just want to watch there movies on their TV as apose to their PC monitor.

The only games that can be stored on the HDD are ones bought from the Playstation Store, no "backups" can be played on the system at this time.

Hope that helps.

Also you might not think it but the space gets used up pretty fast, I have a 60gb and only have about 7gb left and that's just from the game data that's installed when you first start a game and download content from the PS store, no videos or music on there as I use media servers.

The good thing about the PS3 though is that you can always upgrade the HDD!

Yeah if there are any places still selling 40GB one cheap, buy them, they'll be like $100 less im guessing, then use that $100 to get a larger hdd, Sony seem to be charging a tonne for that extra 40GB hdd when for the same price you can go to a PC store and buy a 250GB one!

I have a 60GB model, I sometimes copy the main movie of a BD rip to the HDD, this could take up as much as 35GB. That and a couple of games or other media and I'm maxed out. I have been thinking about upgrading the HDD, but I think it makes more sense to add to my PC's storage and copy to the PS3 as needed.

Most games have installs and some can be 5GB big. I have 13 PS3 games. All are exclusives. All have installs. Plus I have maybe 5 and a few demos. Over have the space on my 80GB hard drive is gone already.

I have a 20gb unit that I upgraded to 320gb. your HD is gonna go quick with games that do installs (which is almost all of them) or if you'd like to add a diff OS like linux. the hd's are cheap and easy to upgrade tho. got the 320gb for under a $100.00. installs in minutes.

40GB goes quickly. Between game data, and demos, I found myself deleting stuff faster than I wanted to in order to actually purchase games from PS store. I just recently upgraded to a 320GB for $50. I decided to copy my 80GB music collection to it. Now, I have access to all of my music for games that support in-game music, and feel a little more secure knowing that my entire music collection is stored in more than one location. I've also transferred movies to the PS3. I transfer my SD rips and xvids, only because I don't use my PS3 for playing standard DVD's. Only games and the occasional blu-ray movie. Having a larger capacity HDD just allows you more flexibility regarding digital data, while still allowing you to grab stuff form the PS store..
