Hey so i just got a wii, and im wondering what my options are for modding, should i take it to a place downtown and get a modchip installed?

or should i use a softmod, my friend told me that there is a way that i can get all the homebrew stuff as well as play backups completly for free. But im really really noob at this stuff so im just wondering what the ups and downs of each side is (what is homebrew anway?) and if its better to get the chip, or if the softmod/free way is just as good?

if i do use the free way, how would i go about doing it, can someone link me to an easy step by step tutorial?

Did you even bother trying to look at stickies or searching even a little before asking this question?

He did assisted you. He told you to look at the stickies and use the search function. You openly admitted that you did not do either and just want somebody to hold your hand on something that has been answered over and over.

ok, fair enough
but i went to the sticky just now and all i see is discussions for diffrent kinds of mods, and chips. like i said im NEW to this COMPLETLY, the sticky could tell me lots if i knew what i was actually looking for

but as of right now i dont know the first thing, mod? softmod? what kind of chip if i go the hardmodding way? What are the ups and downs of diffrent chips/diffrent kinds of mods?

i have no clue :(

If you are interested in modding with a chip read the modchip thread in the stickies to see about which one will work for you.

If you want to soft mod (I do a lot more of these nowadays rathers than mod with chip) then google

my big question though is
whats the diffrence?

do i lose anything from doing one as opposed to the other? if not then ill just go the softmod route and save myself some cash

Again something that has been discussed numerous times in previous threads.

what hasn't been discussed is does your wii contain the new anti mod chip drive.

If you mean the ones with epoxy on the drivechip then thats fairly easy to scrape off from what I hear.

MODCHIP:

pros:

good compatability
simple to use

cons:

difficult/dangerous to install

SOFTMOD

pros:

free

cons:

so-so compatability
a little complicated/user unfrienldly*

(the user unfriendly thing can be changed by finding the autoboot channel version by forsaeken i think.)

MY VERDICT:

the backup loader is easy to use (see above) and only requires a one time use of zelda tp (rent it) .it's compatability isn't perfect but is always getting better. modchips are easy to use but require (semi-) professional installation. my wii is modded but i bought it that way; i would use the SOFTMOD

buy a solderless modchip.

even the most basic noob can istall it. i did.
there are video tutorials round which show u how.

if u do it right the fist time, there is no worries.

you only get probs with solderless modchips falling off or not working if you have to pull them on and off more than 2 or 3 times.

Wii D2E w/ solderless wiikey2
GDR-8163B hooked up via external usb 2.0 case
