Can anyone with a working console tell me how their 360 acts when powered on with the AV cable unplugged?

I'm getting E74 but the red light does not show up when the AV cable is unplugged. The console also won't connect to controllers when the cable is unplugged. Just trying to determine if its the AV cable or the graphics card that has kicked the bucket.

All 4 red lights should come on when system is turned-on without a/v cable. earlier this summer i had rrod (3 red lights) i fixed that with x-clamp but it came back again over a month ago, i fixed it by adding more thermql paste & it worked but now since couple of days I get error 74 which is the bottom right side lite in red this means there is a problem with another chip not cpu not gpu but it has to do with the a/v, you can try different set of a/v cables
i know it rectified their e74 error when they tried new cables, give ut try it may work for you too but chances are that it's not the cable bu what they call 'ana-hana' chip.
BTW, consol won't connect to controllers if cable is unplugged & you will get full red circle when cable is not connected to conosl.

Thanks, yea my controllers don't connect with the AV cable unplugged, I'm gonna borrow a buddies cable and see if that fixes it. I've been told E74 isn't covered by Microsofts extended 3 year warranty.

I don't however, get the full red ring when my V is unplugged, so that's a little bit curious, can anyone else confirm that that is what should happen when its unplugged?

that is coorect, ms does not cover e47 error but only 3 rrod.
I am going to purchase brand new 360 (perhaps elite) I wonder if ms has fixed the problem with newer version of 360 (such as the ones available at retailers now including elite model) or will i have same problem/scenario 3rrod or e47 after few months?

Well it all comes down to overheating. The heat is apparently being reduced as they reduce chip sizes. Jasper is the latest chipset so hopefully the problems solved.

Any possibility to know what chipset & also dvd drive it will have before I make this purchase, as mentioned I will get this from a retailer here in Canada (future shop / best buy) I am sure thety will not know or give me this info prior purchase.
As far as chipset & dvd drive would it make a dufference if go for the standard 360 or Elite version?

I don't believe you can tell what DVD drive you'll be getting before purchase, but you can tell if you'll be getting the latest chipset by peaking in the box at the power rating.

scroll down that a bit and it shows you how to tell if it is a jasper or not
