Open the pic in Photoshop, press shift+ctrl+s. Save window will pop up, hit save and yes to replace. A second window should open after called BMP options and on that window is Depth 16 bit, 24 bit, etc. just click the 16 and hit ok.

The original themes work because all the .BMP files have a bit depth of 16 were as when you get these normal R4 themes these files have a bit depth of 24.
Using standard paint i have managed to get the files (through save as) to different bit depths such as 4 and 8 but cannot get it to a bit depth of 16.
if anyone knows how to change the bit depth to 16 or which program would do this please help.
The best, and cheapest way to do this is through GiMP.
GiMP is a free, opensource application for Windows or Linux.
Google for it and download.
1. Once you have GiMP, you can right-click on the file name and then select 'edit with GiMP'.
2. You can change the image (if you want) then go to File->Save As.
3. Leave the filename the same and overwrite it (REPLACE).
4. At the next popup Window click on the Advanced Options.
-Under 16bit you MUST select the X1 R5 G5 B5 option (red green blue 15 bits+ parity)
-then click SAVE.
That's it.
Do that to all the image files you want to edit/convert.

My bad yungi123, the original themes were 16 bit like you said, not 24 bit. So the files just have to be saved as 16 bit bitmap files.
To change them to 16 bit I opened/edited the files with Adobe Photoshop and then 'Save As'. When saving as a bitmap, you have the option what depth to save as, and you just select 16 bit. Pictures look exactly the same when changed to 16 bit and once loaded onto the DS they look normal!
The only downside is that you have to re-save every file as 16 bit in each theme but at least you don't have to use the horrible default themes.
Here are a couple custom themes I downloaded and changed to 16 bit for you guys to try out.

You need to open each image in photoshop and then save AS, Bitmap, 16 bit...There might be a freeware image editing program that does this too, but I don't know of one.

Hey Guys,
My mom actually found this one to make em work and its easy and free!!!!
GiMP is freeware that can convert the themes from a bit depth of 24 to a bit depth of 16.
http://www.gimp.org/downloads/
1. Go to GiMP (see above link)
2. Download GiMP file (the one at the top/center for use with 2000+)
3. Right click on file name
4. Select 'Edit with GiMP'
5. At this point, you can change the image, then go to File/ Save As
6. Leave file name the same (or change if you want different name) and click Replace
7. On the next window, click on Advanced Options
8. Under 16bit, you MUST select the x1 R5 G5 B5 option (red, green,blue 15 bits + parity)
9. Click SAVE
Done. You do this with all themes you want to convert.
Way to go Mom!!!!

Hi Guys,
Just read this forum today, and thanks to the pointers given here, I manage to find the solution. So I'm sharing it with you all.
To those who doesnt want to download big apps like Photoshop and GIMP, there is a small application that can do batch conversion for BMP from 24 bit depth to 16 bit depth. The application is Easy Graphic Converter. You can download it from here:
http://www.etrusoft.com/graphic-converter/index.htm
Just open the directory that contains the 24-bit depth image, then go to settings, set output directory and 16-bit depth image.

Hi Guys,
So yeah, thanks for the info. I figured it was a problem like that. And thanks also for the little file convertor program. I wasn't looking forward to reinstalling photoshop to do it one by one.
So, nice one. I still think an R4 Ultra website is a good idea though. Or at least a sub-forum dedicated to it. I suppose I could reopen my old forum for that purpose if you're interested in the idea.
Lemme know anyways.
One more thing though. Did anyone figure out how to make the themes switch for the R4 Ultra? It's just select on the old one, or select and A or something or other. But no combination of buttons seems to work for the Ultra.
There isn't a patch out yet for it, either. At least I didn't see one in their site. So maybe some programmer-minded out there can fix it for us?
