i'm trying to play the original rockband 2 game on my wii (wiikey 1.9g and 3.1U firmware).
however, when i insert the game disk it asks me to update. so my questions are:
1. if i update, will it update to 3.4U?
2. is my understanding correct that the 3.4 firmware only affects homebrew channel and wads? so if i dont use homebrew or wads, i can still play all my back up games with 3.4U firmware? will it affect my wiikey?
1) No. Major firmware updates are generally only in first party games. Zelda, Mario, animal crossing, exc. The update in rock band 2 is probably a patch to add compatibility for the instruments.
2) So long as you dont do any homebrew and the game is from your wii's home region its safe to update. No update has ever effected the ability of a modchip to boot an original game disk or an unmodified backup of one.
I've got a PALwii and am wanting to play a backup copy of the ntsc version of rockband2. Just now I've upgraded my firmware to 3.4E. Seeing as that you suggest the disc won't install the major firmware update and will only install some patches, will it be ok for me to install the update from the disc?
Just so you know also, I've tried burning the iso after using wiibrickblocker on the iso but my wii just won't recognise the disc at all, at the game channel it just sits there showing the wii and gamecube discs spinning without giving an error message. Does this happen with some games and not others? I used wiibrickblocker on rockband1 and it works fine.
my concern is not whether or not i will be able to continue to play backups, but whether updating my palwii with the ntsc rockband 2 disc will brick (hopefully just semibrick) my wii.
If you have the Homebrew Channel, load the game through Backup Launcher, I have a Japanese Wii, and for me it was the only way I could load it, but it should help you avoid installing updates (I think...)
