Someone said it was possible to mod a 20 GB Xbox 360 hard drive into a 120 GB hard drive. Can someone tell me how it is done?

That makes no sense. How can you make a 20GB HDD into a 120GB HDD? Impossible.

120GB HDDs come with the elites.

Someone's been pulling the OP's leg methinks. Slap the person who told you this could be done. Twice.

Heres what I did,
i have a 20 gb hard drive, and I went out to buy a 120 gb hard drive(keep the reciept).

I took a heatgun to the foil on both hard drives, removed the foil & screw behind it and gutted both (check you tube) and swapped both hard drives. replace the foil on the 120gb hard drive, go back to the store and tell em you did not need it. WALLA, 20gb converted to a 120gb. Simple as that.

"If its man made , man can mod it!"

Some cop slapping some cuffs on you ass and telling mommy and daddy that their precious little boy just committed a felony would sure make you cry like a 'lil bitch.

Seriously, people like you need to have a swift kick in the ass. Just to show you how "smart" you are.

yeah dude, that's pretty messed up.

If you want to buy a 120 gig, and swap it out with your 20 gig, you can do this process: (I'm pasting from my internal wiki that I run on my home network)

The Specialists HDDHackr Method

What: This tool will allow you to use HDD's that are not 'certified' by Microsoft. This specific tool is written for use with the Western Digital BEVS series only !

How to use: Get yourself a Western Digital SATA BEVS HDD. To use this tool, you need a HDD security sector file ('hddss.bin'). If you don't have one, here's how to create one from a valid xbox 360 HDD:

Dumping the hddss.bin file

Boot to dos from a writeable medium (like a floppy). Connect an *original* xbox 360 HDD to your SATA controller. Make sure it is the only SATA device that is connected. Now run 'hddhackr -d'. This will create a file 'hddss.bin' and it will save it to the path you've started the hddhackr from.

Modding your Western Digital

Now turn off your PC and connect the Western Digital and boot to dos again. Type 'hddhackr -f' from the same path you have saved the hddss.bin file to. This will flash your FW. It will ask if you want to create an undo file. It is advised to do so. This will create an 'undo.bin' file that you need if you want to undo the hack.

Check if it worked

Shut down your pc, reboot again to dos and again type 'hddhackr -f'. It should now tell you that the drive should work in your x360. If so, connect it to your x360 and go to your dashboard/system/memory where you should be able to format the drive.

Restoring your WD to original state

If you don't want to use your modded WD in your x360 anymore and you want to flash it back to its original size, then you can now do so. Boot to dos again and run 'hddhackr -u'. This will use the undo.bin file you created before to restore the drive to its original state.

I have a manual method of doing this if you find it necessary.

Hopefully this hack will keep people from being screwed over when buying a hard drive....

That makes sense.

What I thought they meant to say when they mentioned modding a 20 GB hard drive into a 120 GB hard drive is that all xbox 360 hard drives have 120 GB's and then models with less GB's simple have the remaning GB's blocked. The mod then would have consisted of unlocking the additional GB's. (But clearly that's not the way a 20 GB hard drive is "modded" into a 120 GB hard drive.)

only one issue.

Are you using xbox live.

if so this won't work.

Let me explain.

Microsoft currently looks for the digital signature of each hard drive and each signature is signed to the size of the hard drive if you transfer your 20 gig signature to a 120 gig hard drive the signature will only show 20 gig's of hard drive space free out of a 120 gig hard drive.

I am sorry to say that you need the microsoft hard drive.

Now if you don't want to spend tons of money also you could just get a 60 gig hard drive in the new 60 gig live kit.

It comes with.

One xbox 360 60 gig hard drive

One new style xbox 360 headset.

And 3 month xbox live service.

for 99.99

and the larger hard drive does help loads especially with the new xbox live nxe dashboard.

that's why you use the security sector from a 120gig drive to flash the cheap drive you buy off ebay ...

there are commonly available 120gb security sectors for download on various torrent sites... which is what i did and i can confirm it works fine on xbox live and has all the space available that a normal "offical" microsoft drive would... and cost less than half the price...

honestly, I feel like you and johncc should not be llowed to post in the xbox 360 section, because everything you say is just plain wrong.

You can take a 120 gig hard drive, and put it in the case, and after hacking, you can make it work just fine with the xbox 360.

I have seen this done right in front of me with no issues.
