You should remove all this gunk. Get it to a mirror shine. Don't use any solvent as it will leave residue. Polishing and buffing is the most important part of fix.

correct as burning as said, sometimes you might not be able to get off 1/2 a millimetr of a spot, ok but you should be able to shave using it as a mirror its so clean, as far as the heat sink itself, scrub the metal off of that baby, litterally. just make sure its a gental scrub. :)

Try using 91% rubbing alcohol with the red label. It works good and evaporates quick no residue.Saturate the qtip and dont be afraid to apply a little pressure.

Don't use alchohol because is not very effective and can leave a residue. Best way to remove is to spray it with WD-40 and let it sit a minute. It should wipe away fairly easy. Also don't worry if you leave a bit of the WD-40 on the board because WD-40 is non conductive. You can pretty much soak your 360 in WD-40 and play it just fine. Effective and safe. I hope people try this and realize how much more effective it is and start using this in the tutorials. Anyways hope this helps.

I have fixed about 7 red ring boards,I can get an x clamp off blind folded. The last board I fixed I didnt clean ANY stock thermal paste the board or heatsink and it ran great. The only reason I did it was to see if I was wasting my time cleaning them so good all those times before lol ;)
