I get a message on xbox that it can't play content.

It shows the avi file and at first it said it needed to download an update, but after downloading the update it still could not play it.

I followed the guide Play AVI Files on Xbox to create the file.

Here are the properties:

File : 700 MB (700 MB), duration: 2:29:58, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 32 %, VirtualDubMod 1.5.4.1 (build 2178/release), ,

Video : 575 MB, 536 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 528*224 (Unknown), XVID = XVID Mpeg-4, Unsupported

Audio : 124 MB, 115 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, CBR, , Supported

I suspect that it's because it says unsupported but I don't know what to do.

Thanks so much.

had you downloaded the update before? There has been a issue with it where if you download the update in the past, and then get a new xbox (or refurbished from a RROD problem that microsoft 'fixes') then the old download won't work and you need to delete it off you HD and download it again.

If that isn't it ive had it tell me randomly it can't read a disk then when I turn it off and on again it will read it, odd I know but its worked in the past.

Good luck

I just got the 360 for Christmas so yesterday was the first time the update was installed. I tried restarted it but that did not work either.

I referred this this and it looks like the format is supported. Supported Formats

Does anyone know why AVIcodec says unsupported on the video file?

Thanks

Actually, now that I think about it. I think on my laptop it said it was supported when I ran AVIcodec so that might be just an issue with my codecs here on my work pc.

Anyway, I can't play the file on my xbox, so that is still the issue.

I have the same issue here. Video files won't play unless I'm connected to Live. If I'm offline it says it needs an update to run, but if I'm on Live it works perfectly.

create a silveraccnt, redownload the media update using that new silver accnt. that's what xbox support says to do anyway. and it does work.

Mine plays most AVIs although I did encounter 1 that didn't play a few days ago though. I dont think it saying unsupported means it won't play on the xbox as I have a lot of vids that played. If the avi still dosen't work you could convert the file to mp4. Smaller size and pretty much same quality. To killimus thats extremely wierd. I updated and I play all my movies offline so thats strange.

killimus problem is very common, as i've done it on 2 consoles because of the update, wasn't a big deal as there were already multiple accounts on each we just used a secondary account to download and assign the update to the xbox.....it's a minor issue.

I'm trying to play it from a cd. I also tried it from my pc via media center.

It's already an mpeg 4. Just in an avi container.
