I have some .VOB files and I'd like to put them on my PS3. I'm aware I can convert them to mpeg, but I'll lose quality. How do I do this?

Actually, if I remember my good ol' DVD-creating days, .vob files are simply mpeg-2 files.
http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/vob.cfm
You should be able to just throw .vob files onto the PS3's hard drive. As long as the video is less than 4 GB in size, you should be able to just put it on there.
If it's larger than 4 GB, then you can either split the .vob into two separate movie files, or you can convert it.
EDIT:
Additionally, I believe you can stream it to the PS3 using a media server, and then save the whole file (even if it's larger than 4 GB) onto the PS3 HDD.

Yeah the file is over 4gb. I have the ps3 and pc hooked up to each other. I tried tversity, but couldn't get it working. I can get windows media player to work, but it won't work with VOB files. So is mpeg2 the same quality as a vob?

...more or less, I suppose. The MPEG-2 format is just a standard that videos are encoded to, and the VOB format is a container format containing one or more MPEG-2 video streams, audio streams, and subtitle streams.
So... yeah... I guess you could see it as the MPEG-2 being the video component, and the VOB as being the entire package.
It's similar to the difference between .mkv files and .avi files.
Anyway, you might want to take a look at this thread to help you out:
http://www.redkawa.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-451.html
From what I've been able to see, it might be that the framerate on your .vob file isn't matching up to PS3 requirements. For instance, you could have a framerate of 29.970001 frames per second, and the PS3 won't support it because it isn't 29.970000.
I think the best bet would be to re-encode the file into a DivX/Xvid .avi or a x264 AVC file. There will be some loss of quality, yes, but the former two (DivX and Xvid) have gotten so good that the quality they produce is almost identical to DVD video, and the latter (x264) will almost guarantee a 99.9999% quality video.
...so yeah, I suppose I'd suggest re-encoding the video. This will reduce the filesize while still retaining almost all of the quality.
BUT.
That said, I know you want to keep them as .vob files. Well, then... you can burn the .vob file onto a DVD and transfer it that way (the PS3 will see it as a Data Disc, and then you can transfer that way), but that's a bit of a hassle.
As far as I've read, TVersity will be able to stream .vob files (whereas WMP11 can't), so getting it to work would be your best bet.
So yeah, that's as much as I've got. Sorry I can't help out more.

What I do is once I rip the movie is use DVDShrink to lump the output file into one big VOB file. You do this by going into dvdshrink preferences and unchecking "group into 1GB files". The result is one big file or in the event of a lengthy movie; you would want to make two files each less than 4GB. You can stream them to your ps3 wireless (depending on your connection). I am currently using Nero Media home (free but some options are crippled unless you want to pay). However, if you stick to vob files you can use the free version will no problems. Once you have the big vob files and you don't want to stream you could copy them to the hard drive from wireless or burn as data dvd and play off the dvd or copy to hard drive from the data dvd.
I thought you had to stay under 4GB so I will be testing what KajNrig is saying about copying from network allowing more than 4GB. Will test it out and report back.

beerlover, the PS3 doesn't use the fat32 system to partition or whatever its hard drive. Sony developed its own system strictly for the PS3. It can handle files bigger than 4GB (wouldn't be much of a multimedia device if it couldn't...). The only issue is that the external media attached to it has to be formatted to fat32. That's where the 4GB limit comes from and applies to.

Ok so I'm still a little lost here and forgot about this thread and started a new one sorry...
So how do I setup my pc to stream vob's using Nero? This is the biggest problem I'm having as my PS3 isn't recognizing my PC even though I have an ethernet cable connecting the two. I have the firewall turned off and have setup the pc to share media with the ps3. The PS3 just says "no media servers found"

This may be relevant to this thread but I'm not sure, SO if it's not can someone PLEASE point me in the right direction? This has been driving me NUTS!
I'm trying to make the ps3 the media hub of my house. I've been using TVersity software and it's great for getting stuff off my pc to the ps3, either through streaming or copying directly to the ps3.
What I want to do is to backup my dvd's to an external hard drive with full menu, subtitles, surround sound, capabilities, at xvid or divx file sizes.
So I'm looking for software that can take a DVD and rip it into a file that when played will emulate the actual functions of the DVD onto my playstation without having 4GB+ file sizes.
It'd be nice to have a folder with the DVD info pictures etc then be able to click and open one file and have it act like a dvd giving me the same experience as a DVD just with much smaller file sizes and be able to play on the ps3.
I want to make my DVD collection portable without losing the extras and functionality of the DVD.
HELP!

KajNrig you are right I was able to import onto the ps3 harddrive via nero media home a 6GB movie. Next I will be attempting x264 to try to make the files smaller
ZQ-You either
A)unchecked all audio options in dvdshrink therefore leaving you will no audio (if when you play the audio on you computer you have sound then I am wrong)
B)Have a corrupt file and need to rerip and use dvdshrink again.
I would try an different dvd to get a feel for the process then comeback to your problem child dvd to figure it out after you have a better handle.

Is your PS3 fireware up to date 2.53 or somewhat recent?
It might also be some DRM on the disk. Try downloading the last version of DVDFab its free. It is constantly updated to tackle new DRM stuff. Then rerip with dvdfab. Google "dvdfab free"
Also remember that if you select only 5.1 audio you would need a reciever to decode it.
If that doesn't do it; I'm out of ideas.

I ripped the main movie using DVDFab 5 and it split the movie into 6 VOB files, but when I go to the files on my PS3 via the PS3 media server it shows only one file (all vob files together are 5.54gb) and says it is 94gb. BTW the A/V are working perfect this way, but the file is showing up a lot bigger than it actually is.
When I go to look at the files through Nero on my PS3 it is showing each individual file and they each have A/V that are correct. They also have the correct size per file displayed.
Can someone please help me out?

Ahh hah, I think ps3 media server is your problem. I had a couple of audio issues with it in the couple of hours I played around with it. It is still a work in progress. Download nero media home (super easy) even after the trial is over it will still serve your purpose.

I already have it and it's doing the same thing except that PMS shows the split VOB files as one, but like 95gb's instead of around 5gb while Nero shows them as individual vob files. I have used a program to join the vob's together and it fixed the file size problem, but shows the movie to only be about 1/2 the length yet the entire movie is on it. When I try to fast forward it freezes so I hit circle then X to get back into the movie and it starts from where I stopped FFing it.

As far as the fast forwarding issues go, that's one of the problems of .vob files. I'm not sure why that is, but I think that's just an issue that the PS3 has with stand-alone .vob files.

Ok that's fine, I don't do much FFing anyway. Any idea about why it's only reading about 1/2 the length of the movie?

Merge the files into one file. Change the extension from vob to mpg and it should work fine. Thats how I used to do it when I still used DVDdecrypter.

I've noticed another problem I'm having, on some movies they're about 1/2 the size of my TV, luckily my TV zooms in for this, but I'm worried that maybe I'll get a tv in the future that doesn't have this feature, anyone know what to do about this?

While playing the movie hit the square button. This will resize the video for you.
