i just finally got a ps3 for christmas and after spending all my money on games for it, i realized i should of gotten another controller. but i have a original xbox that i soft modded a couple years ago and i still have the controller i modified to a USB connection. does anyone know if this controller will work on the ps3? it does have the same number of buttons ( if u substitute white and black buttons for L and R triggers). would it cause any harm to the ps3 console itself if i tried it out? like i said i just got the ps3 a week ago and really dont want to take any chances.

or

would it be possible to just use a pc controller with USB connection that is similar design to a ps3 controller on the ps3???

I don't think there's any sort of "Menu" button on the original Xbox controllers, so it'd be impossible for you to bring up the XMB during gameplay.

In addition to that, I'm curious myself as to whether or not a regular USB controller... actually, I just tried it out myself with an old Logitech Precision gamepad, and it worked out just fine, save for the lack of analog sticks and other essential buttons.

So it seems like any USB controller will work. As much as the controller can, at least. I doubt there are any out there that have motion sensing capabilities in them just yet.

...and in case you're wondering ('cuz I was), the 360 controller doesn't work. That's probably already been known for a while, but I tried it out anyway, and it's a no-go.

So yeah. There you go. I'll see if my other USB controller - some Mad Catz one that has rumble and analog sticks, I think - works out, as well, and get back to you on this.

great. thanks for the info. i wasnt sure if the menu button was nessecary. i was thinkin that once the game was already started then the second (modified) controller would be connected allowing access to multiplayer. but deffinately let me know what else you find out with other pc controllers. thanks.

A 360 controller can be used on a PS3 via the Cross Fire.

For the price of the CF, no one in their right mind. :)

If there was a cost effective method, I'd prefer the 360 controller for my PS3. It just fits my hands better.

But that's me. Others despise the 360 controller because of its fit and crappy d pad.

By Cross Fire, are you speaking of that USB wireless adapter thingie that lets you use 360 controllers on the PC? If it is, then yeah, that IS a bit lame. Isn't there a 360 controller that was created specifically for PC gaming? Would that one be usable on the PS3?

And I never did like the 360 pad much. Even the downscaled one felt really... clunky. That and I never liked the fact that they blatantly went Sony's route and replaced the white and black buttons with left and right "bumpers" which feel awkward to press, especially when you're playing a game where you need to press both right trigger and right bumper at the same time and you can't easily move your middle finger around to press the trigger while your index finger gets the bumper.

...that said, I likewise didn't enjoy the fact that Sony took both the "trigger" idea and the motion sensing idea from its two respective competitors and integrated it into the controller. I think they would've been better off putting that "trigger" on the R1/L1 buttons, leaving your other fingers free to press the back shoulder buttons.

But that's me. And wow, I made this post longer than it had to be. Anyway.

I got that Mad Catz controller to work, but I didn't try bringing up the XMB at all. Duh me. So sans the motion sensing, it seems like any PC controller will work just fine.

Or... You could get one of those new fancy XCM Cross Battle Adapter's, that are specifically made for the PS3.

Here is the link to the official website for the product.

I priced the one at Extreme-Mods.com.. $49.99
at TotalConsole.com.. $39.99

Might find it somewhere else cheaper. But honestly, I'm not a fan of neither the XBOX, nor their controllers.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of... the Cross Battle. Not Cross Fire.

The Cross Battle lets the user plug a wired 360 controller in to their PS3.

That doesn't sound right.

If you could, it would have been well known, and people wouldn't have gone through the process of fitting the ds internals in to a 360 controller shell.

What do you mean by fitting the ds internals into a 360 controller? In more layman's terms.

But if it's that hard, then why was it simply a matter of plugging in my PC controller (which coincidentally and luckily mimics a PS2 controller) and being able to use it on the PS3? Sans the ability to open up the XMB and use motion-sensing controls, of course.

It basically acted just like a PS2 controller, but without the lag that people say happens with a PS2-to-USB adapter.

What he means is that some guys have actually built the Dualshock internals into a 360 pad's shell. I thought about doing it once or twice because I also like the 360 pad, but if you try it then I hope you are good at soldering.
