I have a wii modded with wiikey version 1 with 1.9s and a wii at os 3.1u this wii cannot connect to the internet. I was trying to get some simple nes and snes roms running on it that are playable with wiimote, but am having trouble figuring out how. I tried to install the homebrew.iso via dvd but i get the old error/eject disc and reset message, I didnt know if maybe the wii has to be connected to the internet for this install to work. I use Sony DVD-R's burned at 4x with imgburn and have never had trouble with them before on backups. I have an sd card, is this enough or do I need the homebrew channel?

Basically, all I want is the nes and snes roms running on my wii, could someone please tell me the easiest way to do this without the wii connected to the internet, or if its even possible. A good place to get them would be nice as well.

Also in an unrelated problem, I dont want to update my wii past 3.1u yet but my wiikey config disc wont block the updates even after I select it in the options. So so far I havnt been able to play my NFS Undercover.

I'm not sure why the homebrew channel installer iso isnt working, but I can help with the second problem.

Once you get the channel installed you can boot the game through gecko OS to block the updates.

I would try the twilight hack version of the homebrew channel installer.

So my main question is thoug, do i even have to install the homebrew channel to play nes/snes roms, id prefer not to have to if there is an easier way. As for the second problem, I got the game to boot as far as the disc channel by turning on dev mode with the block updates options in my wiikey config. but once I click play it just goes to black screen and freezes.

You dont need the homebrew channel to play roms, but it is the easiest way.

There are 3 ways:

1) You can use the twilight hack to install emulator channels that play roms from the SD card. However if you don't want to install the homebrew channel then you probably wont want these other custom channels either.

2) You can build an emulator disk that contains the emulators and roms. I havent followed developments with the disks lately though. Last time I checked they still used a GC controller and saved to a GC memory card. These may have been fixed to use the wii controllers and save to the SD instead, but I dont even know where to find updates about these so I'm not sure.

3) For many games you can use the twilight hack and wad installer to install the games as wads. At which point they'll function just like virtual console games. For games that havent been released as VC titles yet you can sometimes inject different roms into the wads, but it dosent always work.

And the game you cant boot probably requires a later firmware than 3.1. You can bypass the update but if the game requires something from that update it wont work on a lower firmware.
3.2 is homebrew safe though, and hasnt caused the sorts of problems that some people have had on 3.3 and later firmwares.

So How Do you get the wads, and how do I update to just 3.2u and can I update via sd card? getting low on dvds.

Well theres homebrew to upgrade or downgrade to specific firmwares, but if you're having homebrew trouble you might want to just run mario kart, as that contains 3.2.

And for obvious reasons I cant give you direct links to wads, but suffice to say that they're fairly easy to find via google or your favorite bittorrent sites. Once you get them you'll install them by running the wad manager by booting it through the twilight hack.

Edit: I just checked the release date and NFS Undercover most likely contains 3.3. So even upgrading to 3.2 may not fix your problem.

I did get the homebre channel going but i would still like to install a couple wads to stay on the wii like vc content.

The wad installer is actually of dubious legality anymore, since it's only function was installing virtual console and wiiware games, but all the VC games can be played on the homebrew channel emulators now. So its only use is installing wiiware titles, which is flat out piracy where installing VC games was only questionable (assuming you owned the games already in another format anyway)

Edit: Good, having the homebrew channel installed makes it simpler. The wad installer is set up like any other app on the SD card. The wads go in a folder titled "WADS" in the root of the SD. Start the installer and follow the directions to add or remove games from the system.

So I think Im starting to understand all of this, one last question though. Is it possible to make any of the wii homebrew applications stay on my wii like a regular channel instead of having to load them off the sd card with the HBC?

Most of the emulators do have versions that can be installed as a channel on the wii menu, but they still load the roms from the SD and store saves on the SD.
