Hello....is it true that the original blu ray drive is married to the motherboard and you are not able to replace it only fix the problem

The card that is connected to the bluray drive is married to the board, once you disconnect it and put in a different drive with the board for your ps3 it will work. I have done it when I was trying to figure out my working 80 bd drive with my broken 40g ps3 bd drive.

You can replace the diode (laser) while still using the same drive and drive controller. You said your ps3 plays discs but not game discs? Does it play DVDs, CDs, and BluRay discs? Did it start happening after a firmware update?

Hey...thanks for replying.....I cannot obtain an IP address so I haven't updated yet.....it plays dvds but not blu-ray or games

I was able to do the update.....now it reads the games but I still need to load the blu ray disks a few times before it accepts them.....maybe i need to clean the lens
